broadband, dish, innovations?

Post by onthelake »

Good Morning everyone!

So our move to Coral Bay is here! Our container leaves Saturday and we will meet it there the end of the month.

Now we have to start setting up cable and internet. We currently have Dish - can this be brought down and used on St John? Any suggestions and input would be greatly appreciated!

Pam and John

NOTE: We are also in search of a Jeep (or comparable 4 X4) around 5-8,000.

i would contact dish directly to see if you can transfer your equipment -- as for internet -- broadband all the way. where are you living in Coral Bay ? If you are out beyond aqua bistro you may want to consider a cell booster as well...(depending on your carrier)-- also for a car look on the FB page st thomas/st john bargain trades and sales.

We are before Aqua Bistro - turn at Kings Hill and left on Gerta Marsh and up up the hill. So nice valley view back towards Centerline. Excited to get moved in!

We have been looking on craigslist and the facebook sites for Jeeps, but it hard to do anything- until be get there. Just wanted to put it out there!

Thanks for the info - I'm going to try to set up with broadband to test our location.

Hi Pam,
Yes your Dish equipment will work - Hopper or regular DVR/boxes. Not sure exactly if the dish itself you have will to get the signal. Ours is bigger than the standard stateside dish.. maybe 24" in diameter, round, with 2 recievers on it. Call Cal, he does the Dish installs here... good guy. His website is www.sesincvi.com/

As far as internet goes it depends... based on where you are and how well you can see the Bordeaux tower. Broadband will more than likely be your best option with speeds up to 20mb down on the $99 plan I see speeds of around 15mb down and about 3-5mb in the evening (when everyone is streaming netflix!). I was getting up to 30 down and one point but haven't in a while.
DO NOT get choice. They could not update their service over in Coral Bay so the speeds are pretty non existent. Innovative I heard has been decent... not sure exactly what speeds they are actually delivering. The 25mb plan is new, their max speed used to only be 12mb. Call them and find out if EVO is in your area. Last year it wasn't even on STJ yet and they said it was available earlier this year in certain areas (mainly around Cruz Bay).

As for a Car/Jeep - beware island cars! They get a serious beating down here and you don't want to inherit someone elses problems. Do not buy site unseen and take it to Caravan and pay the guys to fully inspect it before purchasing. If you're gonna be here long term its better/better deal to buy a car/jeep stateside and ship it down. Jeeps and Toyota Tacomas really hold their value well down here.

Good luck, hope that helps

Hope that Helps

Hi Pam and John,

Are you sure you want to leave the winters in Syracuse, NY?

We have have broadband for internet-no problems with speed. The internet only works in the great room-too much rebar in the walls to get it in the bedroom (we tried an extender)

We have DISH-no problems either.

We'll be down beginning of December and hope to meet up with you.
