First Time Visit...

Post by jjakenj »

Hello!
Myself and a small group of co-workers are making a visit to St. John this coming week for some sun (and escape from snow) and the 8 Tuff Miles race! We have heard so many good things about the island, its beaches, the local drinks, and 8 Tuff Miles.

With the event upcoming are there any special events on the island(s) this coming week that we should know about? Is this typically a crowded and busier week? We are a group of young(ish) runners looking for an escape to some warmth from the cold northeast and looking forward to a week of relaxation, rum, some local music/dancing, and beachtime!

Thanks for any help!

Additionally, are there any spots that would be considered more "late night" beaches/bars and others that would be great for a good local meal and relaxing evening?

Anyone ever run the race? I hear it goes up up up!!!

you picked a truly beautiful place to explore!! The terrain is ..ummm challenging,The rum is cheap, the scenery is out of this world and you will return! There are a few laws and customs --wear a shirt when not on the beach and always wear a seat belt and a new one --no cellphone while behind the wheel. Drive on the left..etc. Enjoy!!

Cruz Bay has more late night goings on than Coral Bay. Coral Bay usually closes down around 10. Drinking in public is fine in the VI but remember NO glass on the beach, this is strictly enforced. The day after the race there is a recovery party at one of the beaches. I think someplace has a pasta dinner the night before but I'm not positive about that. It's a small Island, just ask around once you arrive. Enjoy!!!

The day after the race is the recovery party at Oppenheimer beach. No parking and taxis run you there for $5. All proceeds go to St. John cancer Find. Last year was fun. This year I know they are having a beer pong contest.

Quiet mon in Cruz Bay is opened til 4:00am and castaways is opened pretty late. I think karoake is Tuesday but don't quote me.
Sunday night open mike night at sun Dog cafe at mongoose - can't recall exact time but you can call.

Happy Hour food- wings $1 Each at Spyglass , fish tacos 2 for $5
3-6 PM while rum drinks are $3

Have a blast. I will be at the Animal care center water station to cool you down during the run!!
