early May rainfall
Thinking of vacationing on St. John in early May.
Looking at average rainfall tables, May looks to be wetter than surrounding months. My question is: are the rains at this time of year the overnight & early morning type, or are they unpredictable and heavy?
Will want to do lots of snorkeling, and would like clear waters!

Re: early May rainfall
FITS: You do run some risk of an extended period of unsettled weather. Twice a year, in April/May, and October/November, there can (not always, but more often than not) be a period of extended cloudy and rainy weather. November and May are the two wettest months, barring a tropical storm in August or September that passes nearby and dumps a lot of rain, but the latter is usually over with pretty quickly. May and November can hit their means the preferred way (short and heavy rain storms with sun in between), but can also drag things out. We had a week in May turn out that way a few years ago. It can also be wonderful and sunny; it's to some degree the luck of the draw...

Re: early May rainfall
We usually travel during the two periods that Kevin speaks about. On our first year, we really did get skunked by the weather, but that hasn't stopped us from coming again and again. I try to avoid the first week of May though, some silly superstition... Whenever you can get the time, that's when you should come

Always report - 7 to 10 days of solid cloud cover and rain in April or May and again in October or November so 50 of the 60 days will be just perfect but it sucks if you are here for the 10 - you just never know when those 10 will hit.
