57 days to 8 Tuff and I ...

Post by chicagoans »

... fractured my sacrum (at the base of the spine.)

Slipped on the ice about 10 days ago and landed on my tailbone. Since it wasn't feeling better after a week, finally went to the doc yesterday and had some x-rays done. Just got the call... it's a fracture. And I'm supposed to "take it easy."

Ummm, define "easy"? Like maybe just a few miles of running? Pleeeeeze?

Nope. I'm supposed to stop running "for awhile." Oh, and I'm supposed to get one of those donut pillows to sit on. That's a good look!

2013 goes down for me as suckiest year ever.

BUT I refuse to end on a note of self pity, so let me tell you the good news! I had enough miles to get my sister and niece down to STJ with us (me and my two great kids) in February! We're all signed up for 8 Tuff and this is sister and niece's first trip to STJ! I'm so excited and can't wait to show them my favorite island.

2014 I'm ready for you!

OUCH! That sounds very painful! Can I offer a word of advice? Assuming your response would be "yes" :)

I exercise regularly and *hate* when I have to "take a break for a while" and "rest a bit". However, I have learned (the hard way, of course) from various injuries that I heal more quickly if I follow the doctor's instructions and not jump back into normal activities too soon. Right now, I am nursing a foot along after surgery in mid-Dec. I am icing it, elevating it, and putting weight back on it very slowly. My goal is to be 100% healed and functional by our trip to STJ in May :)

The other thing I am doing is exercising within my constraints. Lifting weights for upper body, stretching and mild exercise. Its not the same as my usual routine, but I feel better to have a little movement. Your injury may be a bit harder to work around, but there might be something you can do to stay active, while not running.

Very sorry that you had a tough year. I remember your pics from 8 Tuff in 2013. Here's to positive and joyful things in 2014!

Oh my, I had the same fracture 10 years ago and it was very painful and seemed like it took forever to heal (sorry).

Will you be able to walk the race?

I hope you have a terrific trip no matter what!

Thank you all for the kind words!

AquaGirl... yes I know you're right and advice is always welcome! I plan on swimming tomorrow and probably a couple times next week - good cardio without the impact - and will hold off running for awhile.

Do you run? My doctor said ice and ibuprofen; I read a runner's blog and some other sources that said DON'T use NSAIDs like ibuprofen because they delay healing of bone fractures. Also some said don't ice, as it reduces inflammation which actually helps damaged muscles heal. So I'm totally confused and I stopped taking Advil.

PA Girl: at this point I plan to run 8 Tuff (I have to walk some of it anyway, so may end up walking more than I normally would.) I'm hoping to start running again in about 4 weeks.

Thanks for the info about ibuprofen and icing. I had never heard of those aspects, so I will look into it for sure. I glanced through a few articles, and it appears there is conflicting data on whether NSAIDs interfere with bone healing or not. Here is a link to a scientific NIH article I scanned through and plan to read more thoroughly. Even NIH says there is conflicting data on the effects of NSAIDs.

Sometimes its so hard to know what to do, with sooo much info out there.

I am using ibuprofen for pain control (vs the heavy duty narcotic pain killers they gave me) and for swelling. I have a bunch of stitches, in addition to the broken bone, and its critical to keep the swelling down so the stitches don't pop open. I plan to wean myself off of ibuprofen as soon as possible, since it has some side effects as well. The icing makes a big difference in the swelling for me - it keeps it at bay. I am going to ask my Dr about both of these things.

I'm not a runner - I walk, bike, swim and work out with weights (good for your bones!). I hope the swimming is comfortable for you. Great exercise.

Best wishes in your training :)

Oh, sorry to hear about your injury. Ouch.

When I read the title, I thought you were just going to say what I've been thinking - need to get off my a$$ and train harder.

No problem with extra walking. This is my first 8-tuff and I expect to be crawling part of it.

Hope to meet you in Feb.

Sorry to hear about your fall....

10 years ago when I delivered my son, I fractured my sacrum in the process. For the first 12 weeks I had been taking Ibuprofen for the pain not knowing what the problem was exactly. Once correctly diagnosed, I saw a an orthopedic doctor and he told me to stop the ibuprofen as it did not warrant callous bone to form which is what is needed for healing. I switched to Extra Strength Tylenol for pain and the healing was noticeable very quickly....

Wishing you all of the best in 2014 and a quick recovery for your upcoming trip!!
