Calmest wave action

Post by Juniper&Mike »

Hi All,

It's been a really long time since I've been on here. We went to St. John for our honeymoon June of 2004 and then again in November of 2005. We are now looking to go again with our 4 and 6 year old. I'd like to use airmiles which means I may be limited on dates but I would love to get insight on what months have the calmest water. Our trip in June was awesome - no wave action hardly at all. But our late November trip had high surf. Hawksnest beach was like a totally different beach! I know weather can vary but I'd love to hear your opinions. Also, maybe some good recommendations for a villa that would be good for kids (not one of those where the bedrooms are in separate buildings or even upstairs and downstairs). We've stayed at a couple really nice villas there but the bedroom situation of both of them will no longer work for us as a family. Thanks!

Late April to late July is pretty much guaranteed to be wave-free on the north shore. Late July to mid-October will also be calm except if a tropical storm is passing on the north--not that common, and usually a much briefer rough period than the winter storm waves.

Maho is nice for young kids (although it's one of my faves)-it's generally low on waves and it's shallow.
