First Trip "Must Dos"

Post by cthelz »

My fiance and I are traveling to STJ next month for our honeymoon. Any "must do" activities for us first-timers?? We will be on this island for 10 days, and are looking to do a little relaxing, some partying and lots of exploring. Thanks in advance for your help!!

I would urge you to take a look at the trip reports posted over the past few weeks. They've pretty much incorporated all of the "must do's".

But for good measure don't forget to go to Skinny Legs for lunch.

MOst folks also enjoy renting a Dinghy for the day of beach hopping.
*Another fine scatterbrained production

Since we're still in the planning stages ( OK - confession time - I think I completed the planning months ago and we're really in the "waiting stage" )for our first multi-day/overnight stay, here's what I've decided the "must-do's" are:

1 - Get there.

2 - Have a good attitude, embrace island time, and be as nice as possible to everyone there.

3 - Have a good idea of all of the different options available (reading this board, and some of the recommended books will help in this area).

4 - Realize that at least one of the things I'd like to do, and at least one of the places I want to visit, will probably be unavailable/impractical for one reason or another, and when that occurs, refer to #2.

5 - Take the time to just enjoy being there in the midst of all of that beauty.

6 - Take the time to just enjoy being there in the company of my wife, with time to enjoy STJ, each other, and the freedom to relax.

7 - Relax.

8 - Have fun.

9 - Leave. :(

10 - Make plans to come back. :)
Come see us!

My favs...

* Francis or Maho Beach
* Vie's for garlic chicken and tarts
* Uncle Joes for takeout bbq (though some think Candy's (?) is better
* Day trip over to the BVI if its in your budget, as it always the most fun, memorable thing we do
* Take a good drive all over the east end. We didn't do this on our first trip and really have enjoyed it every trip since

The list could go on forever but there are a few options...

If you snorkel, you should try to do Waterlemon Cay the hike to and the swim will present you with a plate full of memories... and afterword there's nothing quite as relaxing as sitting on the beach in Francis Bay watching the sun slowly drop in the sky.

Also, please try to strike up conversations with people you meet as you are out and about, you'll find your soul slowly becoming glued to the island like many of us on this board.

Here's a couple more...

Hike over to Honeymoon and Solomon beaches.
Rent a dinghy and explore the North Shore

I also recommend a day in the BVI's.

Go to Trunk Bay, check to see when cruise ships are in and maybe go on a day that they are not.

Have a smoothie or many. There are a couple places that do smoothies. We like Thomas' stand in Cruz bay.

Try Sun Dog Cafe/Gecko Gazebo in Mongoose Junction for drinks and reasonably priced food.

Take a drive around the island-stop and take pics of goats, donkeys, cows, deer etc.

Happy hour(s)

:D

You'll have a great time no matter what you do. Just don't try to do it all at once.
When will I see St John again?

My only recommendation is to take the first day and drive the island all the way to the East End and over to at least Salt Pond Bay and all around the rest of the island so you can get a feel for how different it is.

We do it the first day every trip and usually stop at Skinny's for lunch.

Bring your bathing suit when you do it, a camera, and an ice chest in the back seat :)

p.s. stop at the Smoothie Truck on the way home.

One must do

Rent a car and drive the North Shore road, stopping at all the overlooks and checking out all the beaches on the way around. It's really breathtaking.
If you don't take risks, you'll have a wasted soul.

Drive to Coral Bay.

Go to Skinny Legs and have a burger.

Have many drinks.

Relax in your villa's pool.

Anyone know exactly what the hours of Happy Hour are?

This is a great thread for us STJ virgins, if you will. Thanks for the advice!
