We are family - Day 6

Post by Karla »

Today is Sunday and it's quite windy (again). We don't even check out Haulover North this morning since we are assuming it's too rough. The men have decided they'd like to attend the Emmas Moravian Church Service this morning. The girls don't feel like we have appropriate attire (at least that's the excuse we're using) so we are going to drop them off at church and then head to Maho. Depending on how long we snorkel, we will either pick them up on our way back, or they can walk home. We easily find a parking place (everyone else is either sleeping in or attending church service) and head out along the east edge. Lots of fish and interesting sea life. I find an octopus hiding under a rock but it wouldn't come out. There are also quite a few young queen angelfish all swimming together. We see all kinds of parrot fish on this snorkel. They are just "chillin out" on the rocks and don't seem to mind at all that we were so close to them. Some of them actually look like cartoon characters.

After swimming around to little Maho, we turn around and decide to head out to the middle of the bay. The place is crawling with turtles and rays. It must be feeding time so lots of good photo ops. Too bad I already have a zagillion pictures of turtles. At one point, a baby sergent major decides to adopt me as his mama and swims right in front of my mask. I can't seem to shake him and it makes me cross-eyed looking at him.
Are you my Mama?

After awhile I swim back to the rocks to see if my Octopus has made an appearance. I see him out for a second, but before I have time to get my camera, he retreats to his den.

After about a 90 minutes snorkel we head back toward Coral Bay to find the guys. However, by the time we get to the church they have already left. They got home about 5 minutes before we did, and told us all about the service. Everyone was very welcoming to them and they were glad they had attended. We weren't home more than 10 minutes when it started pouring.

I've heard that if it is raining on one side of the island, you should try the other side, so we take off toward Cruz Bay. However, it seems that the whole island was having rain. We hang around in Cruz Bay awhile and then head home for some games before dinner and bed.

Fantastic parrot fish pictures! The first couple do look kind of cartoony.

There sure seemed to be a lot of rays this year - we saw at least one pretty much every place we snorkeled. Lots of turtles, too.
