Some Final Musings
Some Final Musings
We got back to our island on Sunday. The ice was gone, as was most of the snow. This is how it is supposed to be. We had a later flight out than usual at about 4:30 in the afternoon. It made for a more leisurely exit from the island with time for drinks and lunch before being herded and crammed by the airlines. Next year I might try goat water soup at the Red Hook terminal.
Except for those special days (ie. charters etc.) our "normal" day would start early out to a beach, snorkel and late lunch at any of a number of places on island. Then return to the villa, pool till sunset and a light late dinner after cocktails. We have done this for nearly 15 years. This year due to company & guests we have altered the norm. We still rise early and snorkel-hike-beach-it but we tried to sandwich-snack-beer after snorkel. Then return to the villa, pool-it till sunset and go to town or Coral Bay for dinner. Who says old dogs can't learn new tricks. It is just the same ring and the same tent at the circus. Okay, not that much of a change but change none the less.
You can hike in flip-flops. You just have to consider each foot fall. It takes a little more concentration. But yes there are a ton of arguments against it. I didn't say it was wise. I said it was possible.
I have said this once before on this forum but I think it bares repeating. No matter how lost, hot, sullen, bored, burnt, disappointed, drunk or disillusioned you are, SMILE. You will fool the rest of us and we will all have a better time for it.
As much as many of us long time visitors, and some longer than others, bewail the changes on island; change is inevitable. For some reason the older I get the more able I am to adjust to it. Grande Bay, what ever Pond Bay turns into, the loss of Maho Bay campsites and you can add whatever else you like or don't like for that matter, will still go on. No matter how unpleasant we perceive it. We can still preserve what we can, that is why there is a Friends of the National Park. As long as that park is still there STJ will still be a beautiful place and there will still be places in that park where few of us wander. A lot of what made Love City love city and some of the more outre' spirit of the place may have dissipated but it is still a great island. The crowds at Woody's and Beach Bar may have gotten a little or a lot older but sitting on Cruz Bay beach drinking a beer at sunset happy hour still has not lost its' cache'. At least not for me.

Re: Some Final Musings
Welcome back to the Green Mountain state! There's still time to ski
I know that's really what you're thinking of doing!

Re: Some Final Musings
Probably not up to skiing but I do have to stop by the marina and see the boys who feel I've neglected them while there was still ice on the lake. Just to flaunt my tan. Even if it is not, I'll them that it is all over. Not a welcome thought coming from an old man. Maybe I'll rethink this.
