Gluten free options?

Post by amy5233 »

My husband has to eat a gluten free diet. Does anyone know if there are any restaurants with gluten free choices on St John? It would be nice not to have to eat EVERY meal in. Thanks.

We have been pleased at how well the restaurants have done with GF and other food allergy requests! We let them know our requests when we make our reservations and they usually have suggestions!

Ocean Grill marks food allergy info on their menu!

I have celiac disease and have done 5 trips to STJ before my diagnosis, and 5 since my diagnosis. Fortunately STJ is pretty friendly to eating gluten free, as long as you pick the right establishments. The only major difference pre vs. post diagnosis is that I now always have to make my lunch at the villa and take it to the beach, whereas before I could stop at one of the delis for a sandwich to take to the beach. We also always eat breakfast at the villa.

Here are my favorites:

Banana Deck- I get the garlic ribeye with veggie and potato (the potato option can vary but it's always been GF). They are always very helpful when knowing what I can and can't have there.

Cafe Roma- I get the pasta dish with vodka cream sauce (it's to die for), but of course without the pasta. I substitute roasted vegetables for the pasta and add chicken to make it more substantial. The former owner of Cafe Roma couldn't have gluten and over the last 5 years there has always been at least one waitress who couldn't either, so they are well informed there.

Those two meals above are two of my favorite meals in the entire world.

Rhumb Lines- As of 2012 Rhumb Lines has a gluten free menu but you have to be careful because it does list an item or two that are cooked in a fryer that also cooks breaded items. Fortunately I had eaten there many times so when they brought me the GF menu on our most recent trip I knew better than to trust it completely. But if you ask questions they are very good with talking to the chef and figuring out what is GF. On our last trip I discovered a new favorite food, which is their sesame crusted rice cakes. The normal sauce that comes with them contains gluten so they substituted their peanut sauce, which is completely amazing. An order of the rice cakes comes with 4, so I could eat two orders and have a drink and be thrilled with that for a meal and that's about as inexpensively as you could ever hope to eat on STJ. I usually get fish there but after having those rice cakes I might order them and nothing else in the future, they are just that good. Here's where you can find the rice cakes on the menu, they are on the Pupu list and hard to find, which is why we had eaten there 10 times before I discovered them (they're at the very bottom):

I don't know when you're going, but if it's by May of 2013, Maho Bay Campgrounds is also good with accommodating GF diners. We always go on Friday nights for the prime rib. Unfortunately the lease is up at the campgrounds and they are closing around the end of May.
