Do not check on snorkeling gear?

Post by Gizzmo »

Just when I thought I knew what I am doing Jp's post gives me another ? Do not check on snorkeling gear? There are 2 of us with 2 dive bags and a SMALL backpack (camcorder and such)I am flying Spirit and they SAY you can only have 1 carry on. They SAY it is the discretion of the airport to let you slide. I DO NOT want to loose a dive bag at the airport. ANYBODY have info? Tuesday 5/8 3:45 Docking Cruz Bay.... and counting!

gizzmo, to each their own. I never used to check anything, always carried everything. But the new TSA crap makes that more difficult, however I can exist for a couple of weeks with very little, and if my bag with clothes, sunscreen, deet, whatever got lost, it would suck but wouldn't ruin my trip. But if those SOB's lost my snorkel gear, swimsuit, camera it would be a most screwed up way to start my trip. That would so not be fun, so I keep that stuff with me.
When you find yourself in a hole.... quit digging.

We always check our dive bag for that reason as well. What we have found to work well is to wrap our beach towels around our gear before placing it in the dive bag, and then pack the dive bag inside a larger soft-sided bag. We keep our masks in a Rubbermaid container to avoid scratches anyway, so they are well protected. We pack same on the way home but also include dirty laundry in the larger bag (extra padding). Nothing has ever been damaged.
