Scotland – Edinburg and the Highlands?

Post by jmq »

Anybody ever been, including the famous Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in August?
Saw a video about it once – looked pretty cool.

And the Highlands look spectacular in photographs. Any first hand info or prime resource references/links appreciated. Thanks.

We have been in the Highlands and Edinburgh a couple of times... many years ago... did not attend the Tattoo. Most of our time was spent driving (our choice). I'll have to think about what we saw and get back to you. I know there are some forumites who have been there more recently; hope they will chime in.
Go, if you have the opportunity!

Some nice folks who have a lovely B&B on Amelia Island, FL, have been on holiday in Scotland this August... their FB page has some interesting coverage of their journey there. You might enjoy taking a look.

My youngest daughter just returned from a 2 week trip with the Ellington High School Opening Knight Players 2012 Fringe Festival in Edinburg. They were able to see a show by Military Tattoo which, by all accounts, was spetacular. The entire EHS group RAVED about Military Tattoo. She bought a CD of Military Tattoo. It reminded me of another fantastic Scottish group, the Red Hot Chili Pipers. Imagine hearing the Who classic, Baba O'Reilly, with a bagpipe band!

We just returned from a CIE tour 10 day Taste of Scotland and Ireland on August 18th. This was our first time taking a organized tour of this type. We usually arrange and go independently but quite honestly we didn't want to navigate and drive on the left. Were very happy we choose to do it this way.
We attended The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and all of us thought it was really "Terrific". It appears they only do this in August. I thought it was very well organized even with the big crowd. Edinburgh was a very busy town when we were there (Fringe Festival). I would highly recommend going to the Tattoo if your going to be there in August. It started at 9:00pm and lasted about an hour and a half. The seating is assigned in bleachers like a stadium. They offer chair pads for one or two euros (not sure of price). I think they offer a dvd on it. I hope to be getting the 2012 one when they release it.
Any questions, just post and will be happy to help.

I was stationed in Scotland for two years back in 71-72. Land based sailor at RAF Edzell. It was about an hour from Edinburg. Went back in 1989 and then again in 2006 when we picked up our car at the factory in Germany and drove around for three weeks ending up in Scotland. Saw the festival back in the 70s but one of our friends just returned from seeing the festival and raved about it. Highland area, Loch Ness etc is beautiful. The Scots are the true treasure. They will steal your heart and the land will steal your soul. Oh by the way they also have a couple of golf courses! St Andrews is a must do for any lover of the game. PM with any questions. God bless....Bill
