Dominica

I know that some of the other forumites have been to this island. Just got back from a river cruise down the Rhine in Europe and was talking to Hubby about next year's vacation ideas. I'd be perfectly content to go back to STJ but Hubby has whetted his appetite for new experiences. He's fascinated with the descriptions of Dominica. From what I've researched so far there aren't many beaches......so how does that affect the snorkeling? Is it possible to snorkle from shore or do you need to book snorkeling excursions from boats? Which areas of the island are the best for rentals and access to amenities (stores, restaurants, etc.)? Is it relatively easy to get there from the States? How bad are the mosquitos and no-see-ums? I've looked at a few rental villas which seem very reasonably priced but I have no idea whether the locations are desirable (or safe for that matter). Any help I can get would be most appreciated!!
