Anyone have a "how to" guide for newbies?

Post by PA Girl »

New friends of ours are interested in visiting STJ during the summer and asked me send them some information.

Does anyone have instructions/directions addressing the airport to getting on the ferry process?

I don't want to over-educate them against their will but on the other hand, this will be their first trip to the VIs and I think they would like to know the little things like how ferry baggage is handled, what to expect at the terminal, etc.

(I have never taken the ferry, which is why I am asking for help.)

I always ask people if they are looking for the kind of vacation where you take a cooler of drinks to the beach instead of having a waiter serve you one. That turns away at least half the people who ask me about St. John :)

These are most definately a "cooler of drinks to the beach" after they go for a sunrise hike type of people. It was the lack of development on STJ that first appealled to them.

For their first trip......

1) Collect luggage (I assume they will check as most people do on their first trip until they learn lol)
2) Exit airport and tell taxi driver they want to go to Red Hook
3) Arrive at Red Hook and buy the next ticket to St John and to let the ticket counter person know if they have bags as they will need to pay for them.
4) Wait until the ferry starts to board and follow the rest of the people with luggage

I wouldn't tell them ferry times etc - if they miss it they miss it and they will catch the next one and leaving their luggage at the side of the ferry to be loaded is quite obvious when they see the ferry baggage handlers loading and they will be told to leave their luggage at the side of the ferry anyway so no need to confuse them/overload them :)
