St. John vacation rental help

Post by deblar »

We've narrowed our search for a rental to three candidates.

Can anyone provide feedback for Sea Cottage, Romance Cottage and Mountain Eyrie. Much appreciated

Vacation help

I do not recall hearing any of these villas/cottages mentioned here. There was a small villa called Aerie up in the Bordeaux/Mamey Peak area that was enclosed only with screens, and the toilet was outside. I don't think that's the one you are looking at.

I do not know anything specific about any of the three.

Sea Cottage is new, looks terrific, and someone recently said that they had booked it... St John Newbie, I think.

Romance cottage looks to be new and very nice, also.

Mountain Eyrie is owned by Dorothy and Peter Muilenburg who are long time residents of St John and built the sailboat "Breath".

I was thinking of Aerie, at one time and maybe still owned by Kat Sowa, the artist from St John. She used to live up there at one time.

Yes, that was me! We'll be at Sea Cottage 11/25 - 12/5.

We haven't been there yet, but it has great reviews and the price is right!

Even in my vast searching for a place to stay, I don't remember coming across either of the other two that you mentioned.

Happy searching, hope someone else has more info for you!

November soon come!!

I was recently looking into Sea Cottage and couldn't tell if it has a/c? Does anyone know?

I believe it's only ceiling fans. I just read most of the customer reviews and a few of them mention that there are lots of windows and the breeze they provided was perfect... If you're interested in Sea Cottage and AC is important for you, I would contact Monika through Sea Cottage's VRBO page. She is very nice and prompt with email replies.

I can't believe I didn't pay attention to that.

It's not that hot in November and I am not a fan of AC, it dries my eyes, nose, skin, everything!

On our first trip to STJ we left the windows open while we slept and the noseeums found their way in through the mesh in the screens. 200+ bites later, I'd learned my lesson :)

My husband didn't have any bites, they just love me, unfortunately.

Oh, Teresa-Rae, I truly 'felt your pain' as I read your reply. About 15 years ago we rented Valentine Villa (no longer on the rental market, up in Catherineburg). Amazing views but no a/c, basically surrounded by National Park. It was either June or July, hot enough--even in the middle of the woods-- that to get any sleep at all, I too had to leave the windows open (all fully screened, no tears in the screens).

Well, the breezes that came through were nice but the 'no-see-ums' that DEFINITELY are smaller than the screen holes absolutely ATE me alive every night. And when they weren't feasting on me, I swear they did their dive-bombing exercises on me because I sure could hear them but couldn't see them. (Maybe they were 'alien-mixes,' half mosquito/half no-see-um?)

I remember telling my husband at the end of that trip that much as I absolutely love St. John, maybe it was our last trip cause I was miserable--a swollen mass of bites that itched non-stop. Well, thankfully, I didn't let that experience deter me from returning for long. We went to a couple other islands but our response was always the same: "it's nice but it's not St. John." I'm happy to report that I've been back at least 10 times since then and never have I again experienced that. Of course, I do look for rentals now with central air (never thought I would do that before the Valentine experience).
