Another "first day car rental" question
Here are the facts: Flight arrives at 12 noon. Doing carryon only. With luck could make the 1pm ferry. Staying at Lavender Hill, eating out our first night. Would you bother with a rental for that first day? Is there a market walkable from LH? We are arriving on a Wednesday and leaving the next Tuesday, 6 days.

I would. I like to be able to go where I please, when I please. Could you get by without one? Sure - but that's not what you asked!lovest.john wrote:Here are the facts: Flight arrives at 12 noon. You could pretty easily walk from Dolphin Market to Lavender Hill as long as you aren't carrying a bunch of bags of stuff.

If the car rental is giving you a daily, not weekly rate, then I would forego the car the first day, and add that money to the celebration dinner kitty. On your way to Lavender Hill, stop at Every Ting and get drink fixins, then walk down to town in the morning, have breakfast and pick up the car.
We don't do anything on arrival day but enjoy a meal and the view.

I agree with lazylane in that if you have to pay the weekly rate, why not have a car. I would probably have one regardless especially if you are arriving that early. It could be a beautiful day for a drive, photo ops galore, etc. It may just be me but I like having the flexibility to go where I want, when I want.
