trip report #3

Post by strat62 »

next stop was trunk bay. with it being so famous and talked about we felt we had to stop there. we got there about 10 am, snorkeled for a couple hrs. (ok, but nothing remarkable and by noon when we were ready to leave it looked like this....
Image

it was pretty calm and easy there, had some facilities and a lifeguard ( $4 entry charge though ) so if you're new to the snorkeling thing it might be a good spot, but i'd probably skip it the next time around.

that afternoon we went to Francis and had a good time. while crossing over the small rocky point between francis and maho campground lisa had this barracuda swim right about 2' in front of her face. she said she actually screamed in the water...
Image

i imagine this was the expression on her face...
Image

saw several of these guys hanging out in the trees...
Image

tired from a long day in the water. this reminds me of a scene from "Thunderball...?"
Image

walked from Grande Bay for a sunset dinner at ZoZo's. very nice place and terrific views....
Image

wednesday was our last day and we went to waterlemon. i thought i read somewhere that it was 3/4 or a mile hike? seemed like a couple miles to me, thankfully much of it was shaded. well worth it though. water was pretty rough so we didn't go all the way around but saw lot of great stuff there...

went down to the Sun Dog Cafe at Mongoose for dinner (very good!) and the open mic night but as luck would have it rained like crazy just about 7 pm for probably 45 minutes. we ended up eating under the eave and still got soaked. wanted to stick around for the jam but by the time they would get everything dried out and set up it was too late. we had to be packed and on the 9 am ferry in the morning. maybe next time...this pic was before the rain
Image

other places we went and liked were Spyglass, La Plancha and Banana Deck (great dinners and views), Deli Grotto ( wish we had something like that at home...) and Baked in the Sun ( went there multiple times...). one place we didn't eat at was Uncle Joe's Barbeque. that place smelled great each time we'd walk by. knowing me i'd have ate way too much and regretted it mightily the next day out on the water!

all in all we had a great time and would love to go back. many thanks to all for their suggestions and for taking the time to answer my (sometimes obvious) questions.

I enjoyed your reports..looks like there were a few ships in port on your Trunk Bay day. We try to go when there are not any ships in..or at least go early as well..I need to check our dates for our trip and see what days there are none...glad you all had a great time..and Im sure there will be a next time..:)

If that photo from Trunk was the only image I had of STJ - color me off island! But we know better... and even the fabulous Trunk Bay is fantastic around the cay, and when the STT cruisers are absent.

Thanks for your photos - and my vicarious vacation!

Thank you for the reports! I enjoyed reading them.

Uh, yeah...hello? you act like you've been kept busy by an adopted dog family member, and planning for a concert, and other frivolous things. Where's the report????

Just kidding...Iknow it will soon come!

I enjoyed your report - thanks for posting.
Like the other poster, I have never seen Trunk like that, but we only go to STJ in April or May. It definitely sounds nice to be able to walk into town for dinner, rather than driving.
