Another crazy question

Post by Ready2Go »

I have read a few articles about the crime on St John. I do realize that there is no where in the world that would be crime free. I was just wondering is it bad on St John? Should I really be concerned over this. I know I tend over think things sometimes and I just need a little reassurance before I book everything. Is there any certain areas that we should avoid while we are there? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks bunches.

Like you said - there is no where in the world where there is no crime. I have been there over 20 times since 2000 and I have always felt safe.

Just be smart - lock your villa, your car and don't leave valuables unattended on the beach.

I NEVER feel in danger while I am in STJ, but like anyplace you travel just use common sense, don't leave valuables in your car, lock your doors at night, put anything of value in a safe at your villa or hotel if you are not using it and leaving for a while, eliminate those "crimes of opportunity" You should be fine. Random crime is just that, random.

STJ is small, it's really hard to "avoid" certain places, because there's just not that many "places". However, not being big nightlife folks, can't really say what it's like being at the bars late or in town.

We've been 3 times and I feel safer there than in some cities "off the rock".

Thanks a bunch I just need a little extra peace of mind, from people who had been there and knew more about it than I did. Makes me feel better. Can't wait till October.

For what it's worth-- John has been here 11 years and he has never had anything happy to worry about. Of course there is a little bit of the usual petty crime that you find anywhere (I'm talking about tiny stuff like shoplifting, pickpockets that come out at carnival when there are big crowds of drunk people, etc.) but otherwise the island is quite safe. I have never felt unsafe walking around Cruz Bay at night, and certainly never at my house or at friends' houses.

As long as you're smart and use some common sense (like: don't leave valuables sitting in plain sight when you park at the beach! etc), you'll be fine and have no worries at all.

I've made several trips with ladies only and must say that I have never felt uncomfortable or threatened in any way on STJ which is one reason why I love it. I've been to the Bahamas with my husband and there were a few public places there where I felt a little uneasy, even with him there. I get the impression that there could be similar feelings in certain areas on St Thomas although truthfully I haven't spent time there other than travelling between the airport and ferries or in the main shopping areas in Charlotte Amalie. I've heard about a few instances on STJ where certain individuals have had "issues" but my understanding is that there was a combination of alcohol and being in an area where they did not belong during the wee hours - that's simply asking for trouble in my book. I think that anyone with common sense can avoid problems by not acting like an idiot. If it's not something you'd do a home, why on earth do it while on vacation in unfamiliar territory?
Relax and have fun - I find the people on STJ to be polite, honest, hard working and absolutely delightful!
