Halfway Thoughts and Observations
We are in the vacation mode and the days are relaxing and filled with sun. The weather has been perfect! Here are a few observations from a first timer.
1. The island is clean, friendly and overall a very nice place to vacation.
2. Rented a dinghy from Calypso and it was fun. Would highly suggest this activity.
3. We have ate at the following places:
-High Tide...had a burger and fries and it was good. Fair price as well.
-Iguana Grill..had chicken and fish sandwiches and they were good and the price was fair as well.
-Baked in The Sun..stopped and got a stuffed sandwich for lunch and it was tasty.
-Woody's...had a beer and some snacks and it was fun and the food was good.
-Fatty Crab...we both thought that it was overpriced and the food had some unique flavors that we did not enjoy. We felt that we did not get much for the $76.00 we spent.
-Candi's...We shared a rib and chicken combo for lunch and it was AWESOME. For $12.00 we got an awesome meal. You have to eat at this place!
-Cafe Roma...excellent food at a fair price. We will go back.
Off to find another place to dine!

If you're a fan of steak the garlic ribeye at Banana Deck is extremely tasty!
Also, Maho Bay Camps has an awesome (and inexpensive for STJ) prime rib meal on Friday nights:

The dining area is right next to the glass studio shop so it's always fun to stop in there too.

I will offer a dissenting opinion on Fatty Crab. John and I ate there the other night and really enjoyed it. I thought the prices were fair for the portion sizes and the ingredients used. The fishes and vegetables were local and the flavors were really interesting. I do like that type of food though (it's Malaysian influenced), and if you are not into spicy stuff it might not be the best choice. I'll do a full review with pictures when I am back home.
Glad you are having fun, dutchguy! Here are a few more dining options for you to consider: Miss Lucy's (outdoor, right on the water, really good soups and crunch fish), Shipwreck Landing (good fish sandwiches, tasty mixed drinks), Aqua Bistro, (funky seaside setting). All of these are in Coral Bay.

It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.
Barnbob, if you go back, try the whole snapper with chili sauce, it was really good. I can't remember if it was a special or not. We also enjoyed the fish sliders (those were not spicy per se but had a very bright and flavorful slaw on them), and they had a mahi dish with sliced chiles and long bean slaw which was also good. I also liked the green papaya salad. FYI on a previous visit I disliked the fried shrimp as well as the calamari, and those are both still on the menu.
