tell me about Sogos

Post by liamsaunt »

I was reviewing the list of St. John restaurants and realized that this is one of the very few remaining places I have never tried. I was thinking about getting some takeout one night. For those of you who have eaten here, what are your favorite dishes? Also, can you call in for takeout or do you have to order in person and wait for the food to be cooked?
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

Sogo's is one of our favorite places on STJ, though it's been a couple years since we've been on island.

Vel and Al are great hosts, the place is clean the food is good and plentiful and you can always find a seat. You can call ahead for takeout as many locals do.

Kingfish, curried goat or chicken have been staples on the menu but things vary. You can order up to 9 or 12 sides I believe. They have a tasty coconut tart. Enjoy.

We love Sogos and usually get carry-out 2 or 3 times while on island. We have also eaten here, and as the OP said, the people there are very nice and interesting to chat with. The lady is from Dominica and we have visited there, so we enjoyed hearing her stories of growing up there. More often, we call in an order and get carry-out since our villa is on Gifft Hill, so its a quick drive back up to our nice deck with a beautiful view.

Regarding the food - there are several Caribbean dishes we enjoy. My husband loves the curried goat and never gets anything else. I have tried a chicken dish that had Caribbean spices and was excellent (not sure the name - maybe stewed chicken). My favorite dish is the Shrimp Creole.

The food came with several side dishes that were all delicious and several were local Caribbean fare. When we eat there, we order whatever freshly squeezed tropical fruit juice she has that day. I didn't know they had tarts. We will be sure to try them next trip.

I highly recommend Sogos for a taste of Caribbean food. I think they also have hamburgers and other standard items on the menu, but we usually get the same couple of dishes mentioned above, or the Kingfish.

We like the food here too. It's quite casual. She always has a smile; drinks are good; our veggie friends found enough to eat too. Side dishes-vegetarian- are very tasty :D

My husband always gets the curried goat as well. He also likes the salt cod. If they are serving the pumpkin soup the day you are there you should definitely get it. Delicious!

We love Sogo's. Yes, they are very friendly and they have parking. I'm vegetarian and they always do a nice plate for me. My wife loves the jerk chicken.

We leave one month from today!!!!

Ginger tea at Sogo's

Try the iced ginger tea. It's got a bite-but it's really good

I also love the curried goat! Hubby loves their big beefy burgers and good fries.
They are very nice people who will chat if you like or give you your privacy.
