I am making a short trip to Memphis at the end of January. I will be there on a Wed, Thurs and Friday, joining my son on a business trip. I will be staying at a Mariott property nesr the airport. My son will be working Thurs late afternoon into the evening. He will be leaving for home on Friday AM, and I will be on my own, without a car, all day Friday. He travels there for business often, and has seen all the sights, so, except for dinner Wed and lunch Thurs, I will be on my own.
Hope to have some bar-be-cue and visit Graceland while I am there. Figure I could do Graceland either Thursday afternoon or Friday. I understand there is a trolley downtown, and also a great bus tour of the Rock-and-Roll sites. Anyone have any suggestions for things to do without a car? Hoping that I can arrange transportation downtown from the hotel, and then back.

The Mojo Tour is highly rated , I'm not sure if there is a lot of walking involved...

Thanks so much, Sailorgirl. Unfortunately, it only operates on Saturday and Sunday during January. Grrrrr.
I might be able to visit some of the places on the tour on my own. Trying to figure that out now. We are going to eat at Rendevous Barbecue. I wanted to do Neely's but it get such bad reviews I don't want to waste my money. I will keep looking for another good restaurant downtown as I will be down there alone on Thurs night. My son will be traveling to Old Miss to cover the game.

I have been to Rendezvous and enjoyed it. It's a good choice. Have heard good things about Interstate BBQ but haven't tried it. if you're willing to go away from downtown, a little place called the Germantown Commissary is very good. Some say it's the best but with BBQ that is very subjective.

We will be staying in a suburban area near the airport and I understand this area is pretty close to Graceland too. Will see if it is near the Germantown Commissary. Have also heard good things about Corky's and that is away from downtown also. Thanks for your suggestions.

I've been twice for work. the commissary is unbelievabnle, but it's out in the burbs and not near Graceland...unless I missed Graceland entirely, something I doubt one can do.

The downtown area is very walkable and quite nice. There's a tram that runs through the city that cost like a dollar and takes you along the river and through some of the other areas. It's a bit sketchy, but takes you past the Lorraine (a hotel that shocked me with its color. The pictures were always in B/W) and other sights.

Visit the Peabody to see the ducks. that was worth a laugh. then, Beale St is nearby and while it swarms with tourists, it's a fun place to see.

Memphis was cool and, if you ask me, the best part about it is the food in the airport. All the major BBQ places have outposts. Mmmm...pulled pork before a flight...

Funny that you mention food at the airport. My flight arrives at lunch time and my son's flight arrives 2 and a half hours after mine and he suggested I eat lunch at the airport and wait for him, for the same reason. Guess it's a plan.
