March In St John

Post by inuny »

I was in St. John once in March. I remember it clearly-college basketball was in "March Madness". Syracuse University was playing, I was trying to sleep in the bedroom and my husband was was watching the game in the next room and screaming "they're in overtime!". Then I heard more yelling "another overtime!" It went on and on and finally Syracuse won after 6 overtimes. I was wide awake my then.

We'll be there again the last 2 weeks of March.

We always return to St John the last week of March and the first week of April, principally because we are timeshare owners. We have been on the island at other times and can say that the last week of March is usually very busy. At times, school spring vacations can fall on that week to make it busier. That being said, there are ways to set your schedule that will avoid crowds and make your stay much more pleasant.

The trick for the busy weeks is getting an early start. Especially if you are headed to one of the more popular beaches like Trunk, Cinnamon or Hawksnest. As those beaches begin to fill up, move on to the less popular beaches for the afternoon or return to the villa. Be prepared to hike into a beach. While you may not have it for yourself there will be very few people there. If you dine out frequently plan on having your main meal during the lunch hour. It will be cheaper and less crowded. For that special dinner just plan on making reservations.

There will be bugs and depending on how much rain the island has had recently will reflect how many there are. To us the water temperature is perfect. To others it might seem a bit cool. Bring a rash guard just in case.

With a little bit of planning you should be able to have a great time in even the busiest weeks. We have been traveling to STJ at the same time for the last 15 years. It is the perfect time for us to escape the Northeast after a long winter. Usually when we return there are signs of Spring.

In 2009 we were on St. John for Spring Break. We had a great time. The water felt great to us and we didn't have any bugs. We didn't use bug spray either. I don't remember crowds being an issue but we have only been to the island twice so wouldn't realy know what to compair to. I only remember any significat rain on one day and it was only for 1/2 hour.

Have a great time.

I'm an SU grad and my husband was at that game! As amazing as it was, I know he would have preferred to have been on St John! I've been there many times the first week of April. Always been gorgeous. Been there early March a couple times and found the water to be cooler. Any time is a good time to be on St John!!
