Trip report from last week of July! Days 4 - 6

Post by yogagirl »

Days 1 - 3

http://www.virgin-islands-on-line.com/f ... hp?t=21112

One thing back on day 3 when we went to sloops our intention was to hit Vie's. She is closed for the season..so anyone who is thinking of heading over just for Vie's be warned. Last year she did not close until August is my understanding.

Day 4:

Up early and headed to Maho. It was sort of an overcast day so we wanted to be able to get to the car quickly if the weather turned out too rainy. Maho was nice as usual. There were alot more people at this beach than when we were here last august. In general I felt like all the beaches were busier and the volume of people seemed more like when we went last May. I did snorkel here but there was really nothing to see. Overall a good day until the rain came in early and we decided to head to coral bay to go to Skinny legs. I have never been overly impressed with skinny legs and after a long wait we once again had overcooked burgers and to make it just a tad worse the cheese was not really melted. We did meet this man Gary though who was from our home town. He told us to sell all our stuff and move down with our tools and a bike(?) to coral bay. He was a character and a few days later we saw him sitting on the chairs across from the dumpster on the road before island blues. The area that smells bad..I was wondering why Gary was sitting there but we did not stop...I do wonder why people are always sitting there. I forget what we did for dinner that night. I think my sister must have cooked something light for us but it totally escapes me. We did discover that Pine peace has the cheapest bottled water though. $4.00 for a case of water...so go there for that.

Day 5:

We woke up bright and early (as we did every day) and decided to head to Cinnamon for the day. We were provisioned with some snacks and headed out early. Beach was quiet at this point and we had some cloud cover which was nice. The water was a little cooler than when we were there last august but still quite nice. After a few hours my husband and I went to the concession and had pina coladas. They don't give you straws which makes it sort of weird to drink but it was still good. We did a bit more swimming and snorkeling after that. My husband saw some bigger fish over near the rocks...I just saw some small colorful ones. Overall very nice though. By the time we left the place was hopping. After some villa pool time we headed to dinner at Cafe Roma. We had a very nice waitress I think named Anna Maria. We had salad and an appetizer, then entrees. There was a long wait for our main entrees and we smelled something burning in the kitchen...unfortunately it was our pizzas which were served to us anyways after a long wait. The bottom of the pizzas were completely burned...not good. We did not send them back since we had waited so long for them. Oh well. After dinner we walked around town a little...I accidentally used the public mens room too which was sort of funny.

Day 6

Today I knew our food would not be burnt since we had hired Ted from Ted's supper club to cook dinner...

So we decided to have a good breakfast and went to Hercules Pate and got beef pates for breakfast. So good...a must try if you like fried dough and beef.
Then we went to Trunk Bay...I know people say it is overrated but I love it even with all the people. I snorkeled the underwater trail for the first time ever. We then went to the other side of the reef and there were like 3 huge fish there. Not sure what they were but at first glance I thought that they were sharks! We stayed at trunk for many hours. With regard to the life guard stations...I did not find them that obtrusive...especially if they are manned as they are all opened up and there is not as much white space. Only one was open while we were on island but even the one that was not being used seemed to blend into the background after a while. After the beach we headed into town to select some wine for our evening meal and to get ready for our 7 course meal with Ted. This was our third time with Ted and he was wonderful as usual. My tips for a meal with Ted:

1. Don't really eat during the day or drink too much alcohol. You want to be hungry and soberish to fully experience the meal (it is like a 3 hour experience).

2. The first course is tuna dumplings. He always does this and they are very good. Be very careful not to eat too many though.

3. Ted also always makes foccasia as the second course (sp?). It is very good and super filling. We usually just have a tiny piece and save the rest to reheat for dinner the following night. We have learned from experience not to fill up here.

We had scallops and short ribs as a course and then beef tenderloin and pork tenderloin for the main entrees. Dessert was molten lava cake and a lime tort with this incredible sorbet. As my husband says each bite of anything Ted makes is a flavor explosion. All the food was cooked perfectly and was very tasty. Ted is a pleasure to have in the villa, his food is amazing and it very clear that he takes a lot of pride in what he does. He also plays the part of a professional waiter and makes sure that we had whatever we needed at the table...more water, wine etc. He also describes each course as he serves it. He left us the portion of the pork that was not served to have as leftovers the next evening with the foccasia. He cleans up everything and after he is gone it looks like he was never there. I crashed out 15 minutes after he left I think. Completely full!

Well that is it for now...will try to get the remaining days up in the next few days. Hopefully the storm out there stays away from all of you in STJ.

What a great day 4, 5 & 6!! 8)
But I'm super bummed that Vie's is closed for the season! I was hoping to finally have lunch there this Saturday!! Boo-hoo! Guess Skinny Legs will have to do the trick~
Hey, we met a crazy character named "Budweiser Gary" at Skinny's and the Beach Bar last year and he was a hoot!
If he looks like Tom Hanks in "Castaway" after being on the island for 7 years then that's the same Gary we met!!

A dinner from Ted's Supper Club sounds divine! Would love to try that someday~ 8)

Thanks for the great reporting yogagirl!! :D

Great report and thanks for your view of the beaches that you went to. Sorry about your burnt pizza. That is bad business to let bad food leave the kitchen.

Bummed about Vie's as well. Boo-hoo.

When did Vie's close. We went there on Tuesday the 12th and found she was closed - I was bummed but we went to the beach and snorkeled after putting money in her box. The snorkeling was pretty good at Vie's. Luckily, did not run into the shark that I have read about on the forum. I should be posting more on our trip hopefully tomorrow. Maybe on our 2nd trip she will be open.

thanks for the comments everyone...I am now fully re-entered and back in the office :( so it will be a few days before I finish...

MsColleen...that could be Gary. He said he was a carpenter no beard though. Hope you have a great trip!

Coden...have a great trip!

Hawaii - I've been enjoying your trip report as well! Not sure when Vie's closed but the sign was pretty specific...it said she was "closed for season". I was so bummed...her food is such a treat. If the jonny cakes from vie's are something you like I know that Hercules Pate has them...though I can't say how they are since we did not get them.

take care all!

Yep! Our crazy "Budweiser Gary" said he was a carpenter too!! Must have cleaned himself up in 2011! I'll see if I see him this week without the scraggly beard . . . but I'm sure he'll still have a Budweiser in his hand~~

Hope to hear more about your trip when we get back!

I like the Ted thing. His web-site doesn't have costs. Anyone that has used Ted want to share what they have paid per person?
