Helpfull things we have learned this trip

Post by Capn Dan and Ruby »

If you are leaving for STJ soon, or just got back and are planning for next year, I learned a few things that were new to me on this trip, so I thought I would share:
1. When entering on a rocky beach to snorkel, wear your Keens ( or a shoe like them with an open back strap) into the water and carry your gear. When waste deep or in the sand, take off your keens, one at a time, and put your hand through the back strap (toes facing your body) and turn them so they lay on the back of your arm. As you do this put your snorkel fins on. Repete this in reverse upon exiting. It sure saves your feet and they are really very little trouble on your arms. I even used my underwater camera with no problem.
2. A few weeks before coming start taking a B complex vitamine. ( I use one that is sublingual and low in Niacine because it makes me itch) I have been here almost 2 weeks and have not gotten one mosquito bite! :D I have watched them hover around my legs and back off. :? One local was talking about that they hate the smell that your body puts off when taking it. That made since because I have not had the problems with mosquitos that my husband has had.
3. Buy, prepair and eat all the mangos you can if you are here in the next few weeks. They are in season and I have never eaten any better! :D
4. Dolphin market is around half the cost of Starfish, except on wine, but does not have every thing. Go there first, and fill in with Starfish.
5.If you are sending a box get the little individual serving packs of mustard, catsup, and relish. We found sending even the smaller containers of these to be too much esp. if it is just the 2 of you.
6. Don't be in a hurry! 8) And don't make definate plans!(Of course this is the advice that many give and too many do not heed. )

More to come if I think of them. And I will be trip reporting as soon as I get home. Lovango is amazing!!! Do I have to leave? Not for a few more days any way.

Interesting about the B-vitamin complex. I hadn't heard that. I have heard about garlic pills, which I'm bringing.

I also once heard that Marmite (a yeast spread popular in England)is effective, but choking that down was no picnic. The yeast also started backing up on me. I'll spare you the details.

Man, I hope the mangos are still around mid July. I have had mangos from all over the world and the best ones are the ones in season where ever I am living/visiting. Looking forward to the genips also.
I am going to try the B Complex thing, every little trick helps. Laura :D
