More Versailles from July 2010

Post by jmq »

Much thanks to CBama for recent TRs taking me back to France.
We were also there last July early in the month, and I never finished the next part of the trip report that left off right before our daytrip out to Versailles, so hope you don’t mind if I take the lazy way out and just share a few comments and photos now. Thanks.

We did an expensive private tour, which we never do, being long time DIY travelers. But we figured it would help with the crowds and the tour combined Versilles with an afternoon trip thru the French countryside to the town of Chartres and its famous cathedral, widely considered to be the finest Gothic cathedral in France.

Our driver/tour guide spoke very good English but was quite the low talker and not all that effusive about the different rooms/history of Versilles compared to other guides I could overhear, not that a guide droning on and on ad nauseum is a good thing either. He was able to by-pass several lines though which was good and it was nice having door to door service, but overall, a bit of a disapointment for the $$$ paid.

Chartres Cathedral contains the worlds largest collection of medieval satined glass. Removed during WWII, today Chartes survives as Europe's best preserved medieval cathedral
