Starfish vs. St. John Market

Post by kristen1206 »

Are these two grocery stores comparable in terms of price and selection?

Starfish has have anything you'll need, but can be pricey. Having never been to St. John Market I cannot comment on their selection, but I'm pretty sure they'd have lower prices.

I've shopped at both stores...in my opinion they were comparable in price...I think after you've bought groceries once on St John you understand and expect some things to cost more...that being said, we don't focus too much on food/alcohol prices...we're on vacation and need to eat AND drink...

I have no intention of wasting time running around to bargain shop but I figured since both markets were convenient to our villa that I amy as well shop at the less expensive one! :)

Starfish has a larger selection of produce and fruit overall, and usually stocks Josephine's herbs and greens, which is a huge plus to me. That said, the St. John market has a good variety of produce available in decent condition. Plus it is a very convenient place to stop for ice for the cooler in the morning--shorter lines than Starfish.

I think the prices are a smidge lower at the St. John market, but not by too much. Dolphin and Pine Peace are both cheaper than Starfish or STJ market.

I won't buy the meat or fish at any of these locations.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

I only buy meats and some produce at Starfish.
Everything else is just too darn expensive.

In order of my shopping stops
1. Pine peace for just about everything
2. Dolphin or STJ Market for produce and extras that PP may not have
3. Starfish for Meat and Josephines

Yes, they sell beer and wine and the wine selection, last time we stopped, wasn't half bad. Pine Peace is like a large convenience store. I do not like the parking (limited and tight) at Pine Peace and haven't stopped since the STJ Market openned.

Hi - We will be on STJ for our first visit this July and staying on Bordeaux Mountain. What is the closest grocery store to get food, wine, etc. So excited for our first trip and I just booked Rachel today.

Hawaii - you're going to be nearly equidistant between Cruz Bay and Coral Bay. If you happen to be going into Cruz Bay, I'd say you'll want to shop at Dolphin Market or Starfish. If you're over in Coral Bay, head to Lily's Gourmet Market or Love City to pick up food and drink.

Another nice thing about the Starfish is that right across from it is Starfish Gourmet, they have a wonderful selection of cheeses and meats(like italian hams and salamis, etc) and hummus and pita and crachers and a large liquor selection. We got some great stuff there at good prices. It was nice to just walk across the breezeway from the Starfish Market to the Starfish Gourmet. In and out with a weeks worth of stuff for 6 in 30 minutes. And one of the island chefs (Maythayom maybe?) was at the Gourmet market preparing sandwiches, he was making his version of Cubans that day(Cubans are our favorite) and we bought a couple, and they were out of this world.

We usually go to Dolphin for a few things and Starfish to finish up with our needs. We have found the Dolphin to have fresh fruit already cut up more reasonable if they have it.
