Trunk Cay

Post by equinox »

In the few times I've been to Trunk Bay, I don't recall ever seeing snorkelers going all the way around the Cay. Is there a reason for this? Perhaps people were just not doing it when I was there. Would it be an interesting snorkel? Do the life guards frown upon it? Just curious.

I went out to the tip. Current was brisk. I turned back. There are some neat caveish inlets out there.

I was wondering if it might have something to do with the current.

We do it every time. It is kinda swift on the point, but really interesting. If you are afraid of deeper water and current it might be iffy, but I like it.

John and I always go all the way around. I don't find the current to be a problem. It is definitely deeper, so if that freaks you out I would not do it. There's really not too much to see on the backside of the cay, but we have spotted tarpon a couple of times, and once a huge channel clinging crab. We have had luck in finding turtles as well as some larger fish on the other side of the cay.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

The distance to the cay is also decpetive IMHO-- it's a lot farther than it looks if you're swimming from shore.

I think that's also a bit of a deterrent.

We always go around it...there is a current but we've never had issues...
