HELP! Facebook problem

Post by Connie »

I got hacked on Facebook. Here's the story.

Alot of my friends were getting instant messages, which looked like they were from me. Same icon, my name and they said..

We're in London and got held up at gunpoint and please, please send $1500.00 so we can get home....

I was able to get on Facebook to tell my friends and family that we were fine, but the next time I tried to sign on, they asked me to change my password and now all I get from facebook is....

You're account has been comprimised, fill out this form and we will be back to you....

That was a week ago. I don't even think that facebook has a customer service number to call.
I can't even tell you how many times I've changed my password and filled out that form.

I'm not even getting any notices of what people post on facebook in my email.

Does anybody have any ideas or have you been in this position before?

My husband had this on FB where some guy in the Middle East was hacking his account and changinga ll his information. It was a pain in the a$$ to get it back. We had to change our e mail address associated with his FB account and FB put extra security measures on his account. FB had virtually NO way to get help. I spent hours and hours on the computer.

I had to go onto my FB account and go to the bottom of the home page and click on the help button. Then a screen pops up on the upper left that says safety. Click on that and go through your problems. He could do nothing via his account.....we couldn't even log onto his account because the hacker changed his password and everything. You will probably need to do this through someone elses FB. And whatever you do, have FB contact you via another e mail address that is not connected to your FB or the hacker can get the e mails from FB, too.

Good luck....it was one of the most frustrating things I have had to do.

Thanks for that information. I'll try that tomorrow with someone at work.

I just don't understand why people even bother. Don't they have something better to do?

Yeah I hear you. The same guy hacked into my husbands 3 times. This last fix seems to have worked...it has been a couple months now with no problems. Keeping our fingers crossed:)))

I had a similar issue with FB, and they don't offer much support. I dug around on their site and found some trouble shooting areas. I tried several things to fix my issue so I'm not sure what really worked. I think part of my problem was my browser settings were also altered, this made it hard to get any help. If you have access to another account, search "known issues on facebook". FB has a page for known issues. You may find some info there. Good Luck.

Once you get everything with your account fixed... it might help to:

go to ACCOUNT... then Account settings
then Account Security

Set up secure browsing (https) and login alerts.

Secure Browsing (https)
Browse Facebook on a secure connection (https) whenever possible
When a new computer or mobile device logs into this account:
Send me an email

Account Activity
View your recent account activity. If you notice an unfamiliar device or location, click "end activity"

Note: Locations and device types reflect our best guesses based on your ISP or wireless carrier.

A good reminder to tighten up my password for FB. Being I don't have anything credit or identity related on FB I haven't given it too much worry but your post is a wake-up call.

A few months ago I invested in an on-line datavault where I can go in (with a very convoluted password) and store all of my passwords for everything imaginable which has allowed me to make up some extremely difficult passwords that I don't have to try to remember. I did that after someone had hacked my Yahoo account (which only contains my "junk" mail anyways). The hacker was sending something to everyone in my address book which contacts were so old anyways as I hadn't used Yahoo for outgoing mail in at least 5 years anyways. Anyways, better safe than sorry.

Just wanted to report that facebook did get back to me. Amazing!

I had to change my password one more time, but then I was back up and running.

This same scam happened to my mom via her Yahoo email account...we think that she got a very real-looking phishing email asking her to verify her Yahoo account info, and that's how they got her password. They accessed the account, sent out the "London" email to all her contacts, then erased her entire address book so that she couldn't easily send out a "please disregard" email followup.

They also changed the "reply-to" address so that even if she did send out warning emails to friends, the replies would go directly to the scammers, not to her email address. The scam almost tricked a few of my mom's goodhearted and generous friends into wiring emergency cash. :(

The moral of the story is to never click on a link in an email if you can help it -- always go directly to the company's website via direct URL entry and navigate from there.

Brenda, would you mind telling me the name of the datavault you like? Google tells me there are several including www.onlinedatavault.com
Thank you!

LProf ~ Ascendo Datavault is the one I purchased.

Can't even recall where I had heard about it but it was given rave reviews by the tech reviewer so thought I'd check it out. The yearly price seemed reasonable to me so thought I'd try it out. I relate the cost of it as similar to my safety deposit box at the bank. Something you may never need but better safe than sorry.
