Hitch hiking

We are renting a jeep the first week we are on STJ, but will be on Lovango the second week and coming over some days. We don't want to rent a jeep that week. I just noticed a pitch for hitch hiking on the newbie post. Is it really doable? It would be nice not to have to hire a taxi every time we wanted to come over.

We have picked up hikers several times. Once, a young guy working at Maho who was from Alaska. His story was his house burned down and he decided to do something where he could have room and board to work since he really had no home to go back to. He was hiking through the islands! Once, a nice couple who were staying at Maho who went to Waterlemon and were so tired on the way back. I would think you'd be perfectly safe and might meet some new friends! Haven't I seen you on the rock???

Sure you can- just remember to point in the direction you are going don't use your thumb (shows you're a rookie ) you might have a wait but you will get a ride - if a pick up truck stops the "rule" is you get in the bed of the truck not the cabin. It is easy to hike to the cloer beaches getting back from Cinnamon and beyond sometimes can be tough later in the day when traffic is lighter.

I agree with Pia.

I've spent a total of 4 weeks on St. John (2 trips) and have only rented a car for 3 of those days to go out to the other side of the Island (I stayed at Cinnamon both trips).

Rarely took a cab into town, always hitched and some days would have to wait 10-15 min. or so for a ride. Coming back from town at night though, plan to take a cab. Once darkness hits it's harder to wait around hoping someone will stop to pick you up.

I had never hitched in my life before doing it on STJ and I gotta say I loved it and would recommend to anyone who hasn't tried it before. Although I have never in my life hitched at home, it just felt safe to try it on STJ.

Also, one day my friend and I were hitching from Trunk and the cab driver stopped and said "no charge, hop in" and delivered us back to Cinnamon.

we have (and i have singley) hitched all over--it's totally do-able as long as you are not on a schedule! last time i hitched was into Cruz bay from coral bay during 8 tough miles--we were meeting everyone at the beach bar (BTW, we got picked up by a LOVELY young couple who were getting married that week) , then having dinner after and we didn't want to have to drive back.....(we arranged for a cab)--made a ton of sense--

I've picked up several hitch hikers, both local and tourists. It's perfectly safe and a great way to meet people. But like Pia said, point with your index finger. No thumbs.

We've picked up several hitchikers, and have offered rides to ever more, but our offer's been declined.
Would be fun to try it ourselves sometime!

We picked up two different hitchhikers last week on our trip to St. John. The first time we crammed 3 young guys in our Suzuki Vitara (we already had 4 of us in the car!) that were going to the Westin early one morning. They'd been at a wedding the night before and were still reeking of alcohol! Luckily the ride was short! We also picked up a girl on the Coral Bay side of the island who was heading to Maho to meet up with some friends. She was from VT...works on the island for a few months a year. We loved talking to all the people we met and hearing all their stories.

Last year while driving from the East End towards Coral Bay we picked up a young man who was carrying a guitar. The rest of the way to Sweet Plantains we were serenaded by classical guitar music and lots of smiles on both sides. A definate win...win for us all.

I have never been the H-hiker, being from Jersey and all. We have picked up others and they have always been friendly. Most,in my expeirence are usually campers from Cinnamon or Maho headed to Cruz or Coral Bay. I would pick you up Capn. Dan & Ruby, you look safe LOL and good luck.
