Nook or Kindle

I have been using my daughter's Kindle and really like it. Some people I know like the Nook. Which one do most people like and why? Would love to have some input before I get one.

I have the Color Nook. I love it! One of my hesitations about getting a e-reader was that I do judge a book by it's cover. The cover has a lot to do with me picking up a book or not. With the Nook I can look at the different covers in color! It's touch screen, I can surf the web, it has pandora and a couple other ap's. The battery lasts about 6 hrs of reading non stop, and last about 10 days with it in sleep mode. I have never seen a Kindle in person so I am very bias.

Just got the Kindle. I really like it. One of the reasons I got it is the commercial said you can read out in the bright sunlight. During the summer I want to be able to read on the beach.

Even though it's not color, it does what it's suppose to do. I've had it for a week, have read every day and the battery is still full.

I can also surf the web, but I really don't thing that any e reader is that great for doing that.

If you get the Kindle, get the one that is 189.00 because it has Global wifi. That would be a plus.

I found quite a few books that are free and also games, which is fun for my husband.

I have a nook which I've had for over a year now. They've changed them a lot with the color version. Mine is the b/w where you can look at the colored covers and I agree that helped sway me. Couple things about it that might factor in a decision:

Nook promoted that you could get magazines-I don't know if this has changed, but the selection was VERY limited.

Not all books were available on the nook. One of the main reasons I got an ereader was for travel books; I assumed I'd be able to get any of them on any reader but that wasn't true. Kindle seemed to have more selection. If there's something specific you think you'd be interested in, you might want to look into it further before you buy.


I think the color nook would be better for travel books assuming it shows the color pictures (obviously).

I will say that the ipad is great for this because you can get the free nook kindle or ibooks app so you can get anything that any of them offer. But of course you are initially paying more and do you want to take an ipad to the beach.

I do love the nook for the convenience of it! I had soooo many books in my house I was running out of storage space. I hate to part with books-some silly part of me thinks I'll re read everything some day.

On the color Nook there are tons of magazines from Cosmo to Popular Mechanics. You can also do mag supscriptions on it for as low as $1.33/mo.

Haven't had a problem yet with not being able to find a book I'm looking for.

we have a nook and love it--not only is it part of the Dr Seuss lexicon (see 'one fish two fish'--which IMO is reason enough to buy it) but --at least when it came out , it had superior readability to the kindle--david pogue of the times did a review of both --I am not sure he updated that --but you may wan to take a look at his archived columns on the NYT website

Just wondering why the iPad is not in the discussion here - price? Does too many things? You can get the Kindle software on the iPad, etc.

I have the kindle love it realy like that you can sitin the sun and still read it my sons Ipad you can't

I have the Nook color and it is my best friend.
I love the touch screen and the fact that I can download a magazine and read it in color.
I also like the option to borrow ebooks from the library.

I would think if you had any little ones in your life, the Nook Color would be the only one that you would want. The ability to entertain a child with a picture book is just a bonus

I have the Nook(B/W) and an Ipad. Although I have not tested the theory, I hear the Ipad screen can't be read in sunlight. Its also just a bit larger which makes it a bit less comfortable to read and at $500 I would not take it to the beach with me.

Sort of surprised to hear how many people in this small sample of us humans have a Nook - of all the devices it seems to be the least known/sold. I was sort of afraid of owning one for the fear of the future of B&N and what would happen if they went under or something...

The iPad - I would not take it on the beach, no. The Kindle I have seen around and from people that I know that have them they seem to love them. But I also know a couple of people who had the Kindle and when they got an iPad dropped the Kindle like a hot potato!

It is all pretty amazing this stuff when you think about it - 5-10 years ago this conversation was science fiction!

The ability to read magazines would be good-must be on the color nook version.

As e readers have increased in popularity the availability of the books is increasing based on demand. Travel books were pretty slim; I thought lonely planet at first was just on the kindle.

I will say the price of downloads can be higher than I'd like. Since b/n doesn't let you use coupons for downloads, the paperbacks in the store can be cheaper.

I love the ability to download books before trips-I'd always run out of things to read on vacation and be scouring the swap places to exchange books while on island.

Had an unexpected benefit to having the ipad on an airplane recently. I unfortunately got a seat where the overhead light wasn't working and since it was a night flight it was too dark to read the nook. I could read the ipad however

I had the first gen Kindle. I didn't really like it, the background color was gray, not at all easy to read. I got the Kindle app on my iTouch and could sync it to the Kindle, I liked the lighting and colors much better. THEN the iPad came out, I received one as a gift; synced the same apps that I used from the iTouch. I love, love, love it! I use it for EVRYTHING, hardly ever turn on the lap or desktop anymore. In fact I am on it right now. The kindle app is great! Color and font styles are extremely versatile - I love to change the page to black, and dim - great for reading in bed and does not disturb hubby.

I would not however, risk taking it the beach. I do however enjoy it while at the villa. I store it the safe while we're out.

So many apps! There really is an app for everything, I heard on the radio just this morning, there's an app for Catholics - for confession! Honestly! LOL
My new favorite app is Words with Friends - just like Scrabble - anyone play?

I have the regular nook, don't want the color..I think the e-ink reading is easier on the eyes then a IPAD/Color Nook etc. & outdoors it is great.
The nook has a changable battery when it finally stops recharging...not sure how long that is..Kindle has to be sent back to replace.
Nook has a color touch screen instead of a keyboard at the bottom to do all the controls. You can just swipe your finger like turning a real page
Battery seems o stay charged forever..I probably charge it once a week & I NEVER shut it off.
I can use WIFI to get the internet, but I did not buy it for that and I do not think it is very good for that. It is fine for buying/downloading books but I prefer my phone for mobile internet.
Nook has a great Facebook page with a "free Friday" book each week and Thrifty Thursday.
You can lend certain books once to someone for 2 weeks.
I just purchased a waterproof bag so I can take it in the bath & beach/pool from Trendy Digital. It is like those double heavy duty ziploc snorkle bags. It fits the Kindle, Nook.

I thought I would absolutely hate an ereader, but then I got my Nook and I'm a believer.

One thing noone has mentioned yet, but you can download books for free from the library (can't do that with the Kindle). I agree that an Ipad would be the best of both worlds, but who on earth would take one to the beach![/i]
