Turks & Caicos?
Turks & Caicos?
We're in pre planning for our next trip, and T&C has been on our radar for a while now. I've heard Provo is great...looking for laid back, on the beach, close to restaurants (but not in the middle of resort craziness). Let me know if you have any recommendations of places to stay, or any other helpful tips/thoughts about T&C. thanks!
We both vacationed and worked (briefly) on Provo. My quick thoughts, if anything I have to offer prompts questions, fire away:
Provo is flat and dry, totally different views than in the VIs.
Beaches are awesome and stretch forever.
It is not as warm in the winter as the VIs. Delightful and hot during the summer.
Many on-beach lodging options, a huge plus in my book.
Food and drink is expensive. Fantastic restaurants in all price ranges but even "cheaper" meals start at $15 pp. We regularly spent over a $100 for 2 adults and a small child at lunch (including booze) and double that at dinner at the nicer places.
Restaurants and bars on Provo are really spread out, a fair amount of driving is included for a Provo vacation.
There isn't a Cruz Bay type of town to stroll about. Restaurants and bars are scattered along Grace Bay. We did miss the Cruz Bay vibe while on Provo.
I don't know how to describe this observation but people actually "live" on Provo. You will see what some might describe as ugly commercial development - strip malls, building material centers, and the like.

Also, depending on where you are on Grace Bay Beach, you'll see widely spaced villas or multi-story condo/resorts.
I won't go so far as to describe the areas around the resorts as crazy because they are rather spread out.
The reports we hear from former business contacts is Provo has been hit hard economically. Many, many construction projects simply ground to a halt. Unfinished projects are everywhere, which doesn't make for a great impression on tourists.
We know a couple that honeymooned on one of the outer islands and they described it as having absolutely nothing to do, which they enjoyed.
I adore this blog - http://2gringos.blogspot.com/ They live full time on Provo and the wife chimes in on this forum once and a while.
