Maho Bay Camps Saved For Another Season
The Maho Lease Has Been Extended to JULY 31, 2012

The three families who own the land under Maho Bay Campground have generously extended the lease to allow for two more full winter seasons. In addition if current sale negotiations fail another extension is promised. This reprieve from closing Maho has earned our landlords the heartfelt thanks of thousands of folks who find Maho an affordable vacation haven in these difficult times.

"Maho Bay is the most beautiful place on earth. We stayed 8 days in a tent cabin overlooking big Maho Bay on one side and a view of St. Thomas on the other. It was so quiet and stunningly beautiful that I will never forget our visit. We plan to return next year if possible…The nights were breathtaking with the stars, rain, bug and frog sounds. We can't get used to being inside now that we are home.”
With the expectation that the Maho land will eventually be sold Stanley Selengut, Maho’s owner, is aggressively adding units at Concordia Eco-Resort on the Southeastern shore of St. John. Thirty-five years ago when Maho was created, photovoltaic cells, solar hot water heaters, recycled building materials, composting toilets and other sustainable technologies did not exist. These innovations now allow Stanley to add bathrooms, hot showers and efficient appliances to all units while still following Maho’s "close to nature” and affordable philosophy.

There are now 25 Eco-Tents perched along the rocky cliffs and 9 studios providing a more hotel-like experience, Last year Concordia added 4 new sustainable Eco-Studios, which were granted a four-star green builders award. Eight more units are now under construction to open this winter. All 48 units at Concordia demonstrate that it is possible to live comfortably in a spectacular fragile land with little environmental impact.

Question for those of you who have stayed at the Maho Bay Camp. Are the tents relatively mosquito-resistant? My wife is particularly susceptible to mosquitoes and that was her major concern when I suggested we give these places a try for an inexpensive vacation.

Frankly, I am shocked that the discussion advanced far enough to even ask this question. If I get the right answer she will think about it. She's more the resort type.

I know the camps have a lot of things going for them but if it were me I would pay the extra $15.00 per night and have an air conditioned room at Sailview - fantastically clean, beautiful rooms and wonderful hosts - oh and your own bathroom

Ja, Sailview is a sweet deal, but you can walk to three beaches from Maho. Sometimes the additional cost of a vehicle is a make or break for visitors. Cinnamon Bay doesn't have the nice beaches and has a LOT more mosquitoes.

Maho tents mosquito proof? I'd call them mosquito resistant. It's definitely camping. Of our four, two loved and two thought it would be worth paying more for an in-unit toilet.

To each their own, but Cinnamon reminds me of a Jersey shore beach, especially after it rains and the septic tanks overflow while the wind blows sand in my face. But, it does have flush toilets (see sentence 1).
