Summer Airfare from NYC

Post by craigk724 »

I have a quick question regarding airfare from New York this summer. My group of 5 will be on St. John from July 15-23. I have noticed a pattern of airafres being lowest about 2 months prior to travel--for example, USAirways tickets for May 6-14 come in at $346 on Kayak right now, and in December, tickets for February were even lower. Is it safe to wait until prices drop or could I wind up losing out? Are prices not going to drop because it's the summer or something? I just want to make sure we don't get stuck, but if waiting a month or so to buy means saving $500 total, it's worth it. Any tips please? Thanks in advance.

One thing to consider is seat availability on the flight(s) you want. I don't know about US Airways but on Continental you can view what seats are available. So if there are a lot of seats still available, you have the luxury to wait and see if the price drops. But as the flight fills up, you'd better be careful not to lose that flight.

For Continental direct to STT from EWR on Saturdays (early March), I've seen the price fluctuate as frequent as every 2 weeks.

Hope this info helps a little bit.

Im in the same boat, going on August 18-25. Im going to watch for another month and see if the fare history stays the same, ie dropping about 60 days before. Last time I went I booked about 4 1/2 months in advance and a week after I booked, the fare dropped by over $100. Amercian gave us a voucher for the difference (after alot of pleading, but Im not proud). Im also going in July but used FF miles for those tickets

Summer Airfare

I already booked my airfare for July 16. Figure the prices will only go up since oil prices are crazy now and the summer will only see more insanity. I booked American Airlines on the way down, and Continental on the way back. Had to do it this way cause the rest of the family is afraid of "puddle Jumpers" between San Juan and St Thomas. American offers 757 service between the two islands. I think I paid under 1000 for four tix.
