Shipping Our Dog To STJ
We are going to ship our Big dog from Atlanta VIA Delta to St Thomas in late Oct. so we can stay the winter on St John
Any Advise, ?? We know about all the vet paper on the state side etc Have been told that there is not a holding time like the BVI
How do you get a 80 lbs dog form the airport on St Thomas to the ferry? Do they let you take dogs on the ferry??
Any expericence or advice would be GREAT!

I never shipped a dog down, but I did ship one home.
I was fortunate that it was February so I did not have to worry about animal embargos due to hot weather.
As long as you don't have a layover in a city that will be over 80 degrees, you will be fine.
I believe that you have to have a muzzle for a dog on the ferry, not matter the size or breed, but I could be wrong.
When I brought my island dog back to the states, I went to Canines, Cats, and Critters and they helped me arrange everything, so you may want to give them a call.
That is one lucky dog!!!

Hi!
When we flew down two weeks ago there was a boxer on our plane. He flew first class (must be nice). They had him sedated, but not asleep. All this couple had to do is buy a him a ticket and he was not required to be crated and put in the cargo area. I always though animals could only be on board if they were small enough and fit into a crate under the seat.....but apparently not. We were on American Airlines and I did ask this group if he was any type of service dog and they said no. They were just honeymooners who wanted to bring their dog on their 2 week vacation.
Otherwised I know you can put them on the plane but most of the airlines have a timeframe that they won't take animals cause it is too hot. I know that there is a golden retriever named Ivy who makes the trip down every year out of Boston.

A beautiful Great Dane once flew on the same Delta flight as we from St Thomas to Atlanta laying comfortably on blankets in the bulkhead area.petepie wrote:That's suprising that they had a dog on the plane out in the seat. I didn't think they did that. I didn't know if they still let animals in the passenger cabin at all since some people are really allergic to animals.

... no longer a stranger to paradise
Got this off of American Airlines website. Very surprising. Don't know if I would like to be on a flight with 7 other dogs. I know if I took 2 labradors I would need lots of Valium!

I'd say your biggest problem will be transport from the airport to Red Hook.
St. Thomas taxi drivers are notoriously anti-pet--before we had a vet on St. John, or the car barge, the St. T vet used to have to send us a van to the dock when we had an emergency. You definitely have to arrange a private taxi ahead of time--maybe Rachel who is so popular with forum members, or she could help find someone for you? The ferry requires are a muzzle, and the dog has to ride outside.
