Tracks to relax...

Post by olivias dad »

What are some of your favorite music tracks to listen that remind you of the VI? Just stumbled upon something from a modern day band (not typical music from the band), but a great track...311 "Amber"...

Although this was filmed in Jamaica, it still reminds me of the VI. :D

The entire "Blue Chair" CD by KC- but especially 'Somewhere in the Sun', 'French Kissing Life' and 'Magic'

Also LOVE 'Where the Boat Leaves From' by Zac Brown Band

I second Where the Boat Leaves From by Zac Brown Band - probably my favorite. On Jimmy Buffet's Live in Anquilla, I love Still in Paradise - (featuring Bankie Banx) - it could almost be the underlying soundtrack for a VI video.

Thanks for getting music flowing in my head today...!

Keep Smiling!!!

I agree that the entire Be As You Are album is a VI sound track. Boston Mike got me to give it a close look by telling us that touching story about his sister.

Whenever I hear "One Particular Harbour" I see Coral Bay. I used Court Yard Hounds' "The Coast" as the sound track for our video this year.

I second (or third or fourth, etc.) the Be As You Are CD by KC. Every song takes me back to STJ. And most of Jimmy Buffet's do to. Also Jack Johnson's "Banana Pancakes" make me think of laying around in the morning with nothing much that HAS to be done.
Friends, they go away then they re-appear...I believe there is Magic here.

Lately, I tend to lean more toward upbeat Caribbean music with an international flair. Some recent faves:

NaNa - A.R. Rahman
Kurukuru kan (Afro Nisha) - A.R. Rahman

And I just stumbled across this album released in March, 2010 that has a lot of French/Reggae and is a collection of international artists called Livraison Reggae It's a nice twist on the usual stuff!

Sticking closer to home, Michael Franti & Spearhead has some great stuff out there, you can't get more chill than "Ganja Baby."

Also, an import from the Bahamas is the Abacos version of Jimmy Buffett - Barefoot Man. Funny, quirky, irreverent, chill.

There's also something to be said for Spanish guitar music. For a great starter on these tunes go to the Vicky Christina Barcelona soundtrack. Stuff Juan Serrano, Juan Quesada, and Paca De Lucia are three of my faves.

For more mainstream stuff Jason Mraz, Donovan Frankenreiter and Jack Johnson are pretty chill.

@SOonthebeach: Glad to be of assistance! I'm actually trying to pull together a playlist for December. So this topic is timely.

A couple of months out I start pulling new songs and keeping my ears open for new stuff to add. I also mix in a few oldies but goodies. But I don't listen to the playlist until I get on vacay.

If I get anxious or need some good reminders of vacay to come, I listen to the old STJ playlist.

Since there's not much in the way of TV or other stuff when we're on island and vacay I like to have something totally new to look forward to!

That's a fun idea! I actually find myself needing to listen to my island playlist often- sometimes accompanied by a painkiller!!

I haven't updated it recently- so it will be fun to add a bunch of this.

I’ve mentioned these talented kids from NJ a few months ago – the Quincy Mumford Band. They’ve been this summer's soundtrack and would be worthy addition to a STJ playlist for jeep cruisin or villa chillin.

Other QMB songs worth checking out on iTunes:
Grateful
The Waiting Feeling
My Town
Angels Day
All We Need Is
and reggae influenced Can’t Break Free and Dock on the Bay
When we come to place where the sea and the sky collide
Throw me over the edge and let my spirit glide
