Planet Earth series (off topic)

Post by jmq »

Just an FYI for those out there who enjoy this kind of programming...
A new nature documentary series done by the BBC is starting on the Discovery Channel this Sunday night at 8pm.
Saw previews on one of those DVD inserts that have been in some magazines recently. They also interviewed the producers and showed clips on Today show Fri morning.

It is filmed in high def using latest technologies and looks quite stunning, even though some of that predator/prey stuff can be hard to watch.

Really glad that my cable system just added the hi def version of this channel. Anybody else out there with a high def TV and high def cable or sat service should check this out just for the image quality.

Before I got my HD TV I rarely watched the discovery channel. Now that I have one, it is actually one of my favorite channels (other than ESPN) in HD. Planet Earth looks like it's going to be great viewing on HD.

Thanks jmq for the heads up. I saw a promo for this series a while back and it looks really great.

I'll set the TIVO to catch it.

jmq,
Thanks for the reminder; I had made a mental note to myself to remember. Guess what? I had completely forgotten about it, your post jogged my memory. ....mia

Thank you for the reminder. I'm a total geek for nature shows and am really excited about this series!

Now I have something to watch while hubby is transfixed on college basketball!

Our cable company offered a sneak peek at one of the series. It was about Seasonal Forests and it was very very cool!

Agree. Not a big hockey fan, but hockey looks awesome in HD. Wish I had it for the World Cup this past summer. Curious how the Planet Earth series will sound as well. The new HD cable box also outputs 5.1 digital to the surround sound system. Some shows (and even commercials now) really take advantage of it, like Lost and 24.
Even some of the sporting events have good sound too, with annoucers voices coming from the center channel, guys getting checked into the boards in left or right speaker, crowd in surrounds, etc.

I am really excited for this series. John just finished installing our new home theater last weekend and he promised to record this show to watch on it. In previews the quality looks amazing.

HD 50 incher with the surround sound.....better than Spider Man 2.

Great show and absolutely amazing HD shots. What was very interesting was hearing how many of the photographers did their shots.

I think that DVD might well be worth it, especially if it has the 'how we did it' segments.

Thanks for the reminder too. I totally love these shows and it gives me something to do when my husband is watching races and the speed channel (and my kids are hogging the computer so I can't go on this forum). :)

My husband is totally into this series right now. He and my 4 year old watch it! She just looks at me and says "sorry mama, daddy and I are gonna watch the nature show now" she knows I am not a science/nature type of show person. The two of them have bonded over a mutual love of the discovery network!

Flip-Flop like you I had never in the past never, ever, ever watched the Discover Channel. I have to tell you tho' that in HD it makes it great viewing. I think that this new technology has lifted this type of programming to a new height with the combination of content and new camera work.

Try it, I really think you'll like it.

OK, so I can't answer your questions but had to say that I love the "Slowsky" reference.

I am also a Slowsky but hubby pushes for the bells and whistles. He forced me to get a cell phone by buying it for my birthday! This was only a year & a half ago! And we just jumped from dial-up to DSL @ 6 months ago (for fantasy football season).

I was also amazed at that high speed chase on a mountainside! I was actually a little panicked during that entire "Mountain" episode. One wrong step and "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh...". Good lord!
