STT in Jan - What to do?

STT in Jan - What to do?

Ok - I'm putting this on the OT board because this is a cruise ship related question.

In January we'll be docking at STT on our 11th day of a 14 day cruise. Now, if I was positive we would be docking at Crown Bay...then I know we'd be going over to Water Island. But, I don't - so I need back up plans.

I've never spent time on STT at all...so, if you were to choose a Beach to go to, hang out for the day and snorkel, etc...which beach would it be.

Also, for STJ...see, for me, I can't imagine being that close to STJ and not being ON IT...I know you understand. So, if we were to take the ferry over, which I've done before, will a taxi take us to Francis Bay? That is where I really want to go. We can of course go to Mongoose, get sandwiches and head over to Honeymoon...but, I would like to show our friends more of the island.

What would be perfect is if we could hire someone to take us around STJ...anyone know of someone who has a car and would do that? Maybe a bartender/server needing extra cash...whatever works...gas, lunch & brewski's on us!! :D

Thanks for your help!!

Coden, I know your time is limited if you're on a cruise ship.

I'm a STT lover and there are quite a few beautiful beaches you go to.

Sapphire is great for snorkeling and just hanging out under the trees. Go to Marina market first and get yourself an excellent hoagie (as we call them in Philly).

OR

Linquist...gorgeous, but I've never snorkeled there. Alot of kite boarders were there and it was fun watching.

Keep in mind that you should watch how many cruise ships are in on the same day you are. Beaches can get quite crowded, especially Magens (only swimming).

If I had to pick a beach without cruisers, it would be Linquist.

The last time we were on a cruise that called on STT we were in the same boat (well, not literally) as you - we couldn't stand being *THAT CLOSE* to STJ, but didn't want to ride with the hordes on a cab to Red Hook, ferry to Cruz Bay, then an open air taxi the north shore beaches.

So we did a daysail. We still pretty much had a cab to Red Hook (American Yacht Harbor) but from there it was sailing across the sound, a couple of snorkel stops, a beach break on STJ, then back to the ship.

Just another alternative to have in your holster...

It also really surprises me that people who love STJ and have never been to STT except to get a cab to the ferry, don't explore some of the gorgeous beaches on STT.

Connie - thanks for the info. I'll look for pictures of both Sapphire and Linquist. I'm not sure I've heard of Linquist and will definitely look for more info and look at my map. :)

Augie - That is how I found STJ in the first place...an all-day day sail over to Honeymoon beach. Sitting on the beach I said to my DH...we'll have to come back and stay here. And we did. :D

Connie - It's never been because we had anything against STT...it has just worked out that we haven't spent time there. That is why I thought I would explore our options for STT before jumping on a ferry and going to STJ. I feel like we haven't given STT a chance.

Also, I need to look again at the cruise ship schedule, I think we are either the only ship in port that day, or one of 2...

don't know if you know of Rachel on STT but she would be willing to take you anywhere you wanted to go that day. I don't know what her charge would be for the day but might be worth having her at your service for the day. She's a great tour guide too :) Lovely lady.

Connie - I checked the port schedule...only 2 ships, the Grand and the Ruby. Still...almost 6,000 peeps.

mbw - good thought about Rachel. I have heard you all talk about how wonderful she is. Maybe she and I could work out an itinerary so we could see the sites of STT, go to the beach, each some local food, etc. Thnx! Do you know how to reach her?

we have talked to her in the past about doing such a day with her if we were in port but that hasn't come up for us yet.

how may will be in your party? without luggage she can probably take 8.

Coden....I mentioned Linquist as a beach option.

Sorry, it is now called Smith Bay Beach. It is run by the same people that run Magens and is near Red Hook. Sapphire is right next to the ferry.

mbw - there are only 4 of us. I might be able to round up a few more peeps from our roll call, but maybe not.
I've put her name and # in my spreadsheet and will give her a jingle. Thnx!

Connie - thnx for the correction. I'll look it all up and see what we get. We are almost at the 6 month mark so time to start planning. I of course plan daily when it comes to vacations...and think about it daily...I'm addicted. :D

We spent a day and a half on STT last week.

We visited Blackbeard's Castle and were pleasantly surprised by how much we enjoyed it. Intially, we planned the visit for our pirate-crazy son but we ended up getting more out of the visit then he did.

It is a curious mix of touristy stuff (at the top and bottom of the hill) and historic homes. The docents at the historical homes were very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. We are history/architecture nerds and we just loved poking around the houses.

There are two pools on the upper part of the property and an outdoor bar. I think towels, lockers, changing rooms are included in the price of admission.

I got the impression that the complex is cruise-focused. The docents were all very surprised that we were not on a ship excursion.

We also did the walking tour outlined in the St. Thomas This Week mag.

Sherban - thanks for the map link - that will come in handy for our planning.

PAGirl - I'll make a note of that. I love pirate stuff. :D

Has anyone been to the Best Western Emerald Beach Resort?

Here's some ideas---

Start with lunch at Cuzzins or Glady's.

Then do an island tour with Carribean Historical tours, then go to the top of Paradise point for happy hour...something like this....

Hi Sherban - we've been to Cuzzin's and it was great, we'll definitely try to hit it again while there. I've made note of your other two suggestions. We have never been to Paradise Point, I sort of had forgotten it. I'll check Caribbean Historical Tours out and see what they have going on. Thnx for all of the wonderful ideas. :D
