St. John in August?
St. John in August?
My wife and I are always searching for airfare deals to St. Thomas from St. Louis, MO. In early/mid August Delta has round trip air fare for $301 (with taxes, etc.). The latest that we have travled to St. John in the past is mid-June. With hurricane season, how risky is it to book a trip in August? What is the weather typically like then? Are there still plenty of food options?
Thanks. Tim

It's hot with a very good chance of hot with scattered hot.
We've only been in August. It's hot...and when we go, muggy. But, it's empty. If you hit the North Shore beached after about 3:30, you'll be sharing them with a handful of people.
We've seen some restaurants closed, but we're villa-eaters, so it's never impacted us much.
Weather-wise, in 3 years, we've had the one cloud at a time rain nearly every day. In 2008, we had a Tropical Depression roll through one night. I hear it was loud and windy. I was passed out from too much rum to hear it.

Hazy, hot and humid is what we aim for. The place is surrounded by water, right? Problem solved. Whe went to St. Thomas for our honeymoon in 1979 in the first week of August. We didn't think twice about hurricane season. Now, I feel reluctant to go in August even though, schedule wise, it would be convenient for us. I know the USVI rarely gets hit. Am I exagerrating the risk?

My wife and I have been to St. John twice and are heading back for our 3rd time in August. They other two times were in August and September..so, really it's the only time we are there! It is very warm and muggy but not as busy. Some of the restaurants do close but there are still many options. We purchase the trip insurance...just incase
We have never had a problem though. There is rain during the day, and on our first trip there (2006 for our honeymoon) we hit, what the locals were calling, the worst thunderstorm they had seen in a looooong time. I wouldn't steer away from going that time of year...Just take precautions (trip insurance!)

Obviously hurricanes are a bigger deal the deeper you get into summmer and early fall. But there's trip insurance for that. CSA is really good and sold thru a link on this forum:

We've used them several times and they are highly recommended by others on this forum. That way you're covered.
No worries.

We have not been in August, our months seems to always be July. It's hot in July, and people here always wonder how we can go in July. I always say it's HOT, but not Orlando in July/August HOT.

We always go in August- usually the first few weeks. It is hot, but not NEARLY as bad as Texas! Other than the occasional storm (often at night in our trips), weather has not been a problem at all. Much quieter, fewer people, which is nice. Some places are closed but not usually our favorites so we don't notice. I have not been smart enough to get trip insurance in the past (and so far have been lucky) but it sounds like a great idea. We'll be down again this August- 3rd-14th. Have a great trip!

Tim, that's a great price! We also fly out of STL and if it wasn't for the fact that I have a trip booked to NY in August - I'd jump on it!
We have been to STJ in August - and yes it is hot and muggy, with scattered showers - the rain blows in and out pretty quickly. I would recommend you get a villa with a pool and a/c. Most of the restaurants were open.

We went in August a couple of years ago because of the cheap flights and it was the only time that worked that year for the kids schedules with school and what not. We went the last week of August and it was great. Hot, but not Virginia summer hot.
We did have a big bug issue - a bloom because of some heavy rain a couple of weeks earlier - that was pretty annoying, but still it was STJ, so I was happy! Nothing can harsh my STJ mellow!
As for restaurants, most were open. I can't think of any that were not open in August while we were there. I know late Sept and October there are many more closings, but everything was still humming along in August for us.
I would get the trip insurance and go for it!
