delayed luggage gets how far?
Can anyone tell me how far airlines will bring checked luggage that gets delayed, and does not arrive with us? We have a REAL tight connection, and figure our luggage will probably not make it with us. We would already be over in STJ by the time it arrives. Any experiences? Thanks for help!
If it's booked on the same ticket with a so called legal connection (every airport have time limits) by the airline, they are responsible for transporting the luggage to you. If you have separate tickets, they are only reponsible to transport the luggage the flight you have travelled with them. Some airlines don't send luggage further to other airlines. Just from A to B (typical some of the low cost carriers).
But if it's a "legal" connection, I think they will have to deliver your luggage to STJ. Maybe they can say that you have to pick it up by the ferry terminal.
At least this is what I would expect from a decent airline.
Maggy (working in one and this is how we would do). Unfortunately we don't fly to STT

Knock on wood, we've never had this happen but we have traveled with friends who had delayed luggage on American and the luggage was delivered to the ferry dock on STJ. I believe they had to be there to pick it up but as I recall they called and told him which ferry it would be on. Maybe others can confirm this.
Is the FedEx luggage delivery option available down here? We're traveling next week, mainland, w/UAL for the first time in a couple of years and they gave us the FedEx option...."starting at $79" and each luggage can be delivered to your destination whenever you want.
Just curious if this is avail for the Virgins.

I always use AA and have lost luggage more than several times over the years going to STJ. Luggage has always showed up, delivered at the Westin STJ around midnight the same day. We carry-on when we can, like this Friday. Put the essentials in your carry-on.
This is what we experienced in Jan. '09. We had a non-stop flight on AA from JFK-STT and one of our bags did not arrive with us. We were told by the AA reps at the airport and on the phone that the bag would be brought to our villa on STJ, no worries. While we were in Coral Bay the next day, we received a call that the bag was at the STJ ferry dock and we had 30 minutes to pick it up before they would take it back to STT. The "bring it to your villa" was not an option. Fastest cross-island trip ever!byado18 wrote:We've had it happen and have been told we had to meet the ferry to get it.
Same deal with us about 6 years ago. US Air lost two bags, took them 48 hours to get them to us. We couldn't get any info about where the bags were, then we got a call from STT airport and said our bags should be at the dock in STJ in the afternoon, "sometime". We never got a call that they arrived, we just happened to head to the dock after beaching at the north shore that afternoon, and the bags were sitting there, all by their lonesome. Glad people were honest.jigzmom wrote:This is what we experienced in Jan. '09. We had a non-stop flight on AA from JFK-STT and one of our bags did not arrive with us. By the way, US Air reimbursed us that year for all the clothes we bought in STJ while our bags were missing. I think we got like $250 from them, we had to show all the receipts. So, in the end, they came through in the clutch. Check was written directly to us at baggage claim back in Manchester NH airport upon our arrival back.
These days, we bring hardly any clothes, and use carry on's (oh lets not get started on that one!). I think we only check a big bag with all the snorkel gear, and one bag filled with food and sun tan lotions.
Similar story for us. As we were staying at Concordia, our bags somehow ended up at the Maho administrative office at Wharfside, so we weren't required to meet the ferry. And as Jigzmom states above, it was a non-stop flight. I have never checked bags to STT since then. I can get everything including my snorkel gear in my overhead bin compliant bag.jigzmom wrote:This is what we experienced in Jan. '09. US Air lost our luggage on the way to STJ a couple of years ago. It was Boston though Philly to STT. We waited and watched as everyone else on our flight picked up their luggage but ours was no where in sight. It took a couple of hours to get the claim form submitted at the airport then we went on our way to STJ and our villa.
We called the airport and airlines several times while they couldn't confirm that they had located the luggage they told us to check for it at the STJ ferry dock. We were down there waiting for it on each ferry into the night but it was no where in sight. At this point we figured wouldn't see it that night.
Around 8 PM as we were walking out of Dolphin market with over $100 of things we would need but were in our luggage, a villa management rep was driving by and spotted us (or our Jeep) and pulled in right next to us. He had our luggage in the back seat. We were never so happy to see it. If only he pulled in as we were on our way in.
It turns out it did arrive at the car ferry dock but we were waiting at the regular ferry dock.
Now we still check luggage but we always take some addition items in our carry on in case they lose it again. We also write the villa name, phone #, dates and villa management phone # on separate luggage tags.
Good luck.

Similar thing happened to us. Two bags and it was a giant PITA. The bags arrived at the end of day two. Since we were at the beach and not sitting by the phone, the bag #1 spent the day riding the ferry.jigzmom wrote:This is what we experienced in Jan. '09. When we did get bag #1, which was 3 ferries after the one they told us we HAD TO MEET or it goes back again, my husband begged the guy to look for bag #2 and basically offered a good tip if you suceed, he called us as soon as he got back to the airport and returned on the next ferry with bag #2.
When calling after the bags, all I got was "no, no, no, its not here and stop calling us" over and over again.
I said it is a red bag with a bright green ribbon tied to the handle. "Oh yeah, right here is sits, we will send it over." The delivery guy also found my mom's bag based on the fact she had something tied to the handle.
A couple of tips for folks that I would like to add if I may...
I always print out signs (on 8 1/2 x 11 paper) that I insert into each checked and carry on bag. The sign has my destination, the name and number of the villa rental company and the villa name.
I also include my mobile phone number and gmail account on the sign.
I make the signs for both coming and going (although heading home it's less critical IMHO) and place each one in a zip lock bag on the very top of the bags contents or where it can easily be spotted if someone opens my bags.
Also, for my carry-on I take enough stuff that I would need to enjoy my vacay for at least a couple of days. For everyone this could be different stuff, but for me:
1 pr flip flops
Mask & snorkel (fins if I have room)
2 bathing suits
1 cover up
undies x 2
1 pair shorts
2 t shirts or tank tops
1 pair capris
1 sundress
I also genrally cross pack our checked bags so that half of hubbies stuff is in my bag and half of my stuff is in his and I make sure that cross checked stuff make up complete outfits.
In other words I wouldn't pack all of my shorts in his bag and all of his bathing suits in mine. Everything is divvied up so that it works on its own and if we only ended up with one suitcase we will have options.
Whatever I'm doing MUST be working cause we haven't lost a bag yet
I figure the one time I don't go to all the trouble the Jumbies will eat my bag and I will never see it again!!

*Another fine scatterbrained production
We do the same but for some reason, the husband refused to participate that trip. He also refused to take a carry on. Lets just say he got an attitude adjustment that trip when he couldn't find shoes to fit.Gromit wrote:I also genrally cross pack our checked bags so that half of hubbies stuff is in my bag and half of my stuff is in his and I make sure that cross checked stuff make up complete outfits.
