Day/snorkel trips to JVD - not chartered?
Day/snorkel trips to JVD - not chartered?
I'm a little confused and hoping someone can help me. My husband and I will be on STJ 5/11-17 and would love to do a day sail to JVD/Sandy. This is our 3rd time in the USVI and we have been to The Baths twice so we are looking for something a little different. The last time we went we used New Horizons II. So far all the websites I have found that provide day sails require you to charter the entire boat. Are there options for couples where you don't have to charter the entire boat, instead you are grouped with other couples/individuals?
Hope I made sense

We just got back two days ago....took a sailboat to Jost. Like you, we have been to Foxxy's, Baths, etc. and were looking for something a little different. We decided on Bread on the Water. It holds a max of 6 guests and they took us to Foxxy's at Diamond Cay, then we took a little hike to the bubbly pool. Check out their website: www.sailbreadonthewater.com.

Flip flop and I have done a charter or two together. I've also rented a boat (with friend who lived on STT and was an experienced boat captain). While they will do bareboat rentals to novices in Cruz Bay the cost can add up. The fuel alone can run about $250 in addition to the actual rental costs.
One time I had two couples and found Charlie and hubby on this board and they came along we split the cost with them 2/3 and 1/3.
Flip flop and I hate the drunken cruise thing so we are pretty particular.
Also keep in mind that it's nice to have a captain that will take care of all the passport stuff on Tortola. I have gone through that process with a bareboat rental and it can be a time consuming ordeal. Plus if you aren't a regular you get that, "Well it's a Tuesday before noon. Stand on one leg and turn counter clockwise and you'll need to throw in an extra $20 bucks" -- while the stand on leg comment is a joke - the throw in the extra $20 is not.
Unfortunately you are at their mercy and if you choose to forego check-in on Tortola you risk some pretty hefty fines and penalties. Just make sure to factor this into your travel time.
So if you're an unexperienced boater my advice is to charter something that's close to your price range and then hunt around on the board for someone to come along. Chances are someone's out there who'd love to split costs with you.
