Bar Harbor
Bar Harbor
Anyone around here been? We are thinking of heading that way in October and experiencing Acadia and the surrounding area.
Looking for lodging recommendations. I know Vicki was up there a few times and I know where she's stayed (I think). Looking to hear from anyone else where they might have stayed or where they ate or what they did while there. You know the drill
Thanks!
Mary Beth

Hi Marybeth,
We stayed at the Bar Harbor Inn once, but it must have been very forgettable, because I barely remember it.
My sister goes up there a lot, and we have similar tastes. I asked her and she wrote:
We always stay at the Inn at Southwest Harbor. There is also a great authentic mexican restaurant there that we always go to as well. Here are both links:

We did a road trip about five years ago, in late September, from Connecticut up through Maine and over to St. Andrews by the Sea in New Brunswick. We stopped overnight in Bar Harbor, we stayed at a local chain hotel, nothing special. It's an artsy town, very interesting, and in October it shouldn't be too busy. We took a drive through Acadia National Park, very beautiful.
Continuing on, we stayed five days in St. Andrews, just over the Maine border, before driving back home, overnighting in Freeport. Very enjoyable trip!

It has been several years - We stayed at a major chain outside of town, a Holiday Inn SunSpree that was right on the water. It was fine for what it was. We did it as a last minute thing and got some Priority Club deal.
If we had it to do again, I would want to stay in town. I do remember walking around a lot at night, bar hopping and such and it was sort of a drag to get back to the hotel at night.
I would also consider staying in Southwest Harbor. We spent a very nice day there, it was lovely.
I don't remember much about the park except it was insanely hot, so much so we couldn't stand to do much activity. (it was freakishly hot that July)
We did a whale watch boat trip and saw tons of whales. My husband still talks about it and wants to go back solely to see whales again.

My favorite things:
Mt. Desert Island Ice Cream (much funkier and cooler than the traditional favorite Ben & Bill's ....I mean anyone who has flavors like Chocolate Wasabi, Girl Scouts Gone Wild, and Neato Doritos has to be good...):

Reel Pizza Cinema (Picture an old theater full of comfy old sofas with throw pillows where you order a pizza first, go find you a sofa and a couple of T.V. trays, then watch the "bingo board" for your number during the movie when your pizza is ready):

Walking across the sand bar at low tide to Bar Island.
Hiking in Acadia National Park.
Lunt's Lobster Pound:

We stayed at the SaltAir Inn and I couldn't recommend it more highly.

I remember Southwest Harbor as being much more quiet than Bar Harbor. It is more of a sailing town. Again, this goes back a couple of years but it strolling about town in the evenings appeals to you Bar Harbor might be a better choice.mbw1024 wrote:I keep going back and forth between Southwest and Bar Harbor. I'm leaning toward Bar Harbor so we can walk around and such. I don't get the feeling from SouthWest - more of a driving area I would imagine, right?
Off to check out the SaltAir Inn.....
MB, just played tennis with a friend who was wearing a Bar Harbor t-shirt. She said they like to stay here:

From there, you can easily walk around town, she said.
