Where to live when you retire
Where to live when you retire
This is for those that are reaching retirement years and thinking about where they want to live for retirement years.
1. Do you want one home or a main stay and a retirement home?
2. Where would you want to live if you could afford anywhere in the world?
3. Is your plan to not have a mortgage payment when you retire?
4. Are you settling for where you are currently living because you are close to family? But you desire to live in a different location?
5. Is your plan to stay put in the four season area you currently live in but plan to spend the cold months in a warmer area?
Your help with these questions is greatly appreciated.

I am about to turn 50 and, as a result, have given this issue some thought.
I absolutely love where we live...about 9 months out of the year. We have a house on a lake in Wisconsin. My preference would be to be here while the lake is open (not covered in ice) and to be elsewhere when it is not.
I would not buy a place elsewhere, as I think that the initial investment would not be worth the payoff.
So, my plan (about which my wife knows nothing) would be to stay where we are for about nine months a year and then to head warm for the other three. Whether that "warm" place will be STJ is yet to be seen.
My wife and I grew up on the North Shore of Chicago. We left it as soon as we could because it was too, too. I worry that STJ is becoming that...a place only for the rich.
So, I don't know where we will land. Here will be home and we will land elsewhere when here is too inhospitable.

Wisconsin, smell the dairy air
We're getting there, but not as close as we would have been 15 - 20 years ago.
We don't have kids, so there won't be any grandkids that we need to be near.
1. Do you want one home or a main stay and a retirement home? One home; mainly because should my hubby go before me, I don't want to have to worry about 2 homes
2. Where would you want to live if you could afford anywhere in the world? Tahiti, with a very large home on the beach and a very large boat at my dock.
3. Is your plan to not have a mortgage payment when you retire? One more year of a mortgage, then none.
4. Are you settling for where you are currently living because you are close to family? But you desire to live in a different location? We live where we currently live because we can both have good paying jobs and we're close to some family on both sides. I don't think we're settling; we like it here.
5. Is your plan to stay put in the four season area you currently live in but plan to spend the cold months in a warmer area? That's the million dollar question - we go back and forth. Stay here (maybe Cape Cod) and go south in the winter; or move somewhere with a manageable winter (South Carolina) then come back here in the summer and mooch on said family (LOL).

What do you think of Branson/Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri??
My husband really wants to retire there and we there is a lot of housing right now. We aren't retirement age but if we got a place now we could go there for vacations and later go there for the winter.
What I want is a condo or house in a gated community. We don't want the type of condo's that are on top of each other--side by side is perfect.

Re: Where to live when you retire
1. Do you want one home or a main stay and a retirement home?
One home. I hope we can travel a bit during retirement, and I'd want to maintain a "home base".
2. Where would you want to live if you could afford anywhere in the world?
We think the answer to that is STJ at the present, but the second part of the question would be the biggie here.
3. Is your plan to not have a mortgage payment when you retire?
Yes - that is the plan. Or I should say, the plan is to pay off the mortgage we currently have before retiring.
4. Are you settling for where you are currently living because you are close to family? But you desire to live in a different location?
We live in an area where quite a lot of people come to retire anyway, and we've been living here by choice, so if we decide to stay here, it won't be settling. I don't think that my sons will come back here to live after school, the way I did, so being close to family may not be entirely possible anyway.
5. Is your plan to stay put in the four season area you currently live in but plan to spend the cold months in a warmer area?
N/A - where we live is not considered a four season area, even though we've had more of a winter this year than I can remember.
We may try and go live somewhere like STJ during the early years of our retirement, then move back somewhere on the USA mainland to see the grandkids grow up and to have easier access to goods and services for our later years.
We'll see - good questions for discussion!

Come see us!
Ideal for us might be a condo with a view or at least walking distance to the water on the Oregon or Maine coast May thru September, then the high desert of NM or AZ October thru April.

Good eye - that is somewhere between Canyon de Chelly and MV, closer to MV.promoguy wrote:JMQ
That picture in AZ....looks familiar. Lots of mesas out that way, but that one looks like the one along the road to Monument Valley??????????

it's a ways away for us but we think/talk about it none the less!
1. Do you want one home or a main stay and a retirement home? One home
2. Where would you want to live if you could afford anywhere in the world? I have no grand plans to live some where outside the Continental US
3. Is your plan to not have a mortgage payment when you retire? that's the plan!
4. Are you settling for where you are currently living because you are close to family? But you desire to live in a different location? No settling but yes we live close to family. Closer to my family than his but not by any grand design.
5. Is your plan to stay put in the four season area you currently live in but plan to spend the cold months in a warmer area? I doubt we will stay in NJ. I imagine we might end up in Maine and would love to be in a position to get away 3 months a year maybe to a place like STJ or some other location.

It may depend on where our kids end up. Being very close to my parents now makes me realize how great it is for the kids to be close to them and vice versa. In addition my siblings are near and we have lots of great friends in town, so I wouldn't mind staying here but traveling alot for fun. As much as I'm currently tired of winter, it would be hard for me to leave.
I'd actually like to do what our neighbors do: a house here in the suburbs; a condo downtown with a view of the lake, where from their living room they can see their sailboat at Chicago Yacht Club. hmmm... might have to ratchet up that savings plan!

1. Do you want one home or a main stay and a retirement home? One primary residence and right now I'm thinking longer-term rental for January - March somewhere WARM.
2. Where would you want to live if you could afford anywhere in the world? By our children, but see #1 about winters.
3. Is your plan to not have a mortgage payment when you retire? There will be no mortgage!
4. Are you settling for where you are currently living because you are close to family? Yes. Aging parents live just a 2 hour drive away. I'd move every 5 years if it were up to me, but with 2 kids still at home and parents in their 70's (mine) and 80's (wife's) we aren't going anywhere.
5. Is your plan to stay put in the four season area you currently live in but plan to spend the cold months in a warmer area? Absolutely, positively yes!

1. Do you want one home or a main stay and a retirement home?--this is an interesting question. part of me would love the stability of one home with longer stretches on vacation, because i think that it adds to family stability--however, I think it also would be nice to have a piece of something else --with warm being an operative term.
2. Where would you want to live if you could afford anywhere in the world? i can't even begin to answer this question! There are so many variables! the practical side says spend several months in the summer on an island in maine , have an apartment in NYC or Boston and a winter place somewhere in the caribbean (becquia, st croix? i think STJ will be too expensive for us)--and that is the practical side.....the impractical side has me in new zealand, southeast asia, maine (always have to have maine in the mix) with a place in maybe sicily or crete one of the cylclades---certainly not happening unless Mr Loria wins the Nobel prize (and even then it would be dicey!)
3. Is your plan to not have a mortgage payment when you retire? no mortgage. cannot afford to retire with a mortgage
4. Are you settling for where you are currently living because you are close to family? But you desire to live in a different location? No, Mr Lorias parents have a place in brea (CA) and in Toronto--they split their time between the two--my dad is in massachusetts--so i am close-ish, but wouldn't let that be a factor in my plans
5. Is your plan to stay put in the four season area you currently live in but plan to spend the cold months in a warmer area?
that would be my preference---I find that as i am aging my tolerance for cold has diminished (and my knees can no longer handle a complete day on the slopes....so.....I do like a bit of winter though. like one good blizzard... then i am done. maybe i need to add a house in vermont or colorado to my list
Your help with these questions is greatly appreciated.

< leaving on the 22nd of march...but too lame to figure out the ticker thing again!>
Hubby and I are in our early 50s; I am basically retired (self-employed but not working due to implosion of the economy). He plans to retire in 2015, at age 57.
1. Do you want one home or a main stay and a retirement home? -- I would prefer one home. Trying to take care of two does not sound like a relaxing retirement! However, we've considered purchasing a vacation home (condo) that is rented out by a management company, while having a full-time residence elsewhere.
2. Where would you want to live if you could afford anywhere in the world? -- Somewhere in the Caribbean. But unless we win the lottery we'll have to settle for long visits.
3. Is your plan to not have a mortgage payment when you retire? -- That's possible if we purchase just one home; if we also purchase a vacation rental, we'll probably have to have a mortgage on one of the properties.
4. Are you settling for where you are currently living because you are close to family? But you desire to live in a different location? -- No. Our closest family member is a three-hour drive; my mother, our only living parent, lives in Florida and is researching independent-living communities. So being near family is not important, that's what airplanes are for! We will definitely move south but still not sure where.
5. Is your plan to stay put in the four season area you currently live in but plan to spend the cold months in a warmer area? -- No, we'll leave New England's nasty, snowy winters and head south for good. Hubby is a waterskier, we both love boating and golf; our ultimate retirement home would be in a gated, adult-only golf community with a fresh-water marina.
We will be taking several vacation trips during the next few years to golf/lake communities in northern Georgia, Tennessee and the Carolinas to see what each has to offer. Last October we vacationed in Hilton Head, SC and although we loved the island, we cannot ever imagine living there during high tourist season.
The whole retirement thing is scary-exciting!
