Credit Cards w/Airline Miles

Post by Diana2 »

I'm having an "I hate American Airlines Day" today. We have used an American Airlines credit card for years and years and use our miles to fly to STT at least once a year. AA is making it harder and harder to use your miles and offering fewer and fewer flights so I'm thinking about changing my credit card to an "any airline award". I know there are lots of options but I wondered if any forumites use this type of card and what their experience has been.

I LOVE my Starwood American Express.... the mile can be transferred to any airline and for every 20,000 mile you transfer they give you a bonus of 5,000 miles!

We use Capital One. Low interest rate and the ability to redeem points for any travel if you do so within 30 or 60 days of purchase. Last trip we got 2 roundtrip airfares and I just paid for our Jeep rental with the points.

What exactly is the name of the card? I'm very serious about changing the way I'm accumulating and using award points/miles.

Thank you for your responses. I'm checking out the Capital One card. I just want a card that will fully pay for a ticket (no $600 limit) and one that makes it easy to redeem the miles. I'm looking at one of their cards that gives me 2 miles per dollar spent.

I've been doing alot of research tring to find a new CC too. We've been using a Royal Carribean CC for years now and get a free cruise about everyother yr. Which is great but have recently found we were more of island people, not so much cruise people. This of course after a trip to Hawaii and STJ. If memory serves me Capital One gives 2 miles per dollar, only after you spend 1000 a month, and the first 1000 every month would be one mile per dollar. Which is still good if you spend alot a month. Another card that has peaked my intrest is Chase'Sapphire and Freedom cards...one is a cash back, the other is a rewards card. But I'd be intrested in anyone else's opinion, esp if they actually have/use the cards.

I like the Amex Blue Sky Card.

You pay for any travel costs (air, hotel, car) upfront and they are credited on your bill.

Only bad thing is a lot of places don't take Amex so you have to have more than 1 card.

I've had great luck with my platinum delta skymiles AMEX card (not to be confused with the regular platimum AMEX which has a Much higher annual fee).

Annual fee is $75 I think and I have managed to get 7 fully paid tickets to STJ over about a 3 year period and 4 fully paid tickets to Vancouver for this summer. I think the fees per ticket are about $15. I am annoyed that Delta is now charging $25 for the first checked bag but still even with the annual fee + the $15/ ticket and $25/ a bag it sure beats paying $450-700 a pop!

We have an Amex Plat card. So far I am happy with it. We run a lot of business expenses through it so the points add up fast. The fee however, is steep. If it wasn't a business expense, I don't think it would be worth the fee.

We have a Bank of America "World Points" Visa which we've used since 1998. We may be Grandfathered into their rewards program. There is no annual fee and we get one point per dollar spent, with no expiration on points earned.

You can redeem your points for travel through their agency, which sometimes is a good deal, OR, you can get cash back. I've recently found that the cash back is a better deal (it covered our flights plus some, for this year's trip).

I know what ya mean Diana2 we've used the AA card for the last couple years,it can be tough. We are very flexible with our vacation times though. Just booked two weeks sat to sat out of Columbus. Hurricane season is wide open as most don't want to take the risk. Last year we had perfect weather in Sept.Gonna pay the fee so we can get one more tick out of them. Capital One seemed like a good deal to me too. The other day I was offered 30,000 free miles(takes two years and $3000 a year in purchases) from them with no annual fee so we joined.Should have a few free ticks in two years. That double miles deal is what we were going to do till we got the other offer in the mail. They might offer it if ya called and asked about it. Noticed it wasn't something being offered when I was comparing their cards online.

I've really had it with AA. I live in Michigan and with the flights as they are it's impossible to get home in one day from STT and that really is unbelievable. They have reduced the number of flights in and out of STT and they have reduced the flights in and out of our regional airport in Grand Rapids. On my return I can get as far as Chicago but there aren't any flights to GRR later than 7:20PM and since the connecting flight from STJ doesn't get to ORD until 8PM we're stuck. My loyalty to AA is over and done so I'm in need of a new card that gives me more options.

I've been doing a lot of research and I think the Capital One No Hassel Miles Ultra for Professionals looks the best so far. 2 miles for every dollor spent and $39/yearly fee. Does anyone have this card?

Let me nominate my personal favorite for completely lying and ripping off the public these days. The biggest joke going is the Delta Frequent flyer Skymiles card...Umm, anybody try to get anything lately for the last few years? I've looked ahead as far as I can for can't count how long now. It is pathetic. I think AA at least throws us crumbs...can't say the same for Delta. Oh and my personal favorite...after schedule changes completely destroy any hope of a stress free travel experience...
is their response of OH well, you can always cancel and redeposit your miles and try to buy, reshedule on your completely sold out days...... Ummm...no thanks, Good luck to all of us that bought into this debacle...
Hoping for a USVI ticker in 2013!
