We didn't stay up for the night shuttle launch this time, but many years ago (1972) my sons and I witnessed the last Apollo moon shot (Apollo 17) from our front yard in AF housing. It was a night launch and the vehicle was a Saturn V. It was a thrill none of us has ever forgotten.

During the missions, my husband was always away from home at the staging area because he was with Air Force Eastern Test Range. They would fly the Apollo Range Instrumentation Aircraft (ARIA) out to a rendezvous point, usually in the middle of the Pacific, and record and relay the telemetry of the spacecraft as it went over while in orbit.

I'm grateful that while we lived there we saw history being made with the last 3 Apollo missions, Skylab, and Apollo/Soyuz.

I saw a launch in 95 or 96 when I visited Disney. We had to get up really early and we were exhausted. We got a late start and got stuck in traffic about 15 to 20 miles away. We pulled over and watched from the break down lane with about 50 other cars that had also pulled over. It was an awesome sight I'd love to see again but closer. I'd rather pay money to see it (if you really had to) than go to Graceland....

Verjoy - how super exciting to see an Apollo lift off!! I am such a space geek! We visited Kennedy Space Center several years ago and standing under that Saturn V hanging from the ceiling was incredible! All the pictures I took can't even give a person an idea of how huge it is!

I always hold my breath when they say "Go with throttle up" because it was right after that that Challenger exploded. I always hold my breath!!

When I was working for Disney back in summer '97, we were fortunate to see a launch live right from our apartment in LBV. If you are familiar with the area at all (Lake Buena Vista), our apt complex was about half-way between the Crossroads shopping center and the intersection of 535/536. The shuttle seemed to fly right over the apartment...I have a picture somewhere of the white trail it left as it ascended.
