Help with Scottsdale AZ plans please ....

Post by Kentuckygirl »

I read MaryBeth's Arizona TR and I'm sure other's have been there too. Thank you MaryBeth! I found good information and nice pictures in your reports :) I could use a little more help though. My daughter turned 16 yesterday and I'm taking her to Scottsdale for a mother/daughter trip in a couple of weeks. I'm thinking we'll spend most of our time by the pools, escaping our cold Kentucky winter, plus some good food, and probably a little shopping/spa time. I'm looking for hiking suggestions, and any other things not to miss, especially if the weather doesn't cooperate. I really don't want to rent a car, so we're planning on staying near the hotel, and using trolleys, shuttles, or cabs if necessary. We are splitting time in 2 areas ... Paradise Valley in Scottsdale, and the Desert Ridge Phoenix. Any recommendations/suggestions?
Thanks!!!

My experience in Scottsdale has been that the area is extremely dependent upon having a car. You should probably talk to your hotel to see if they have a shuttle, as I've stayed in many different hotels in the Scottsdale/Phoenix and none of them have had a shuttle, even to the airport. We have always had a car.

You should plan on it being cooler in the evening. Once the sun goes down, it gets chilly.

Have a great trip!

Hi Kygirl .. glad you found my report, hoped it helped some. I can't really help with your specific questions but I will say I can't imagine being there without a car. Have you been there before? It's sprawling - that's the only way I can put it.

If you do decide to look at cars think about renting in town as opposed to the airport. I understand you can get much cheaper rates that way. And that way maybe you don't have the car for your entire stay. Something to think about.

Have you chosen your lodging yet? We stayed at Westin Kierland which was lovely and very close to the Kierland Commons shopping area. I'm not a shopper but this area was very nice. High end, outdoor shopping mall with good dining options. The Westin runs a free shuttle to the Commons, if that helps.

We got a car service to dinner one night and I think it cost us $30-40 each way and we did not go far. Less than 10 miles I'd say. So that's a pricey option.

If I can answer anything else for you let me know. Also Trip Advisor for Scottsdale has a lot of people who can help you with your logistics.

Have a great time!

We have friends who live in Paradise Valley so I've spent a good bit of time there, and also can't imagine being there (or anywhere in that area) without a car. Have fun.

Thank you all for the advice. It sounds like, as much as I don't want to drive out there, that a car is the way to go.
MaryBeth, I have booked hotels. We are staying at the Doubletree Paradise Valley, then the JW Marriott Desert Ridge.
The Doubletree has a shuttle that will take us a couple of miles, like to Old Town, but not an airport shuttle. Once in Old Town, we can use the trolley to get around that area. The JW has a shuttle that runs to the nearby shopping and restaurant area, but no airport shuttle there either. There is the super shuttle, which we may have to use if we don't rent a car at the airport.
I have done quite a bit of research on Tripadvisor and asked over there as well. Thanks again!
