Kayaking to Whistling Cay
Kayaking to Whistling Cay
Read about it from you wonderful folks, but never did it.
So,-
Rent at Little Maho by the campgrounds, correct?
Price for a couple?
Distance to/from Maho?
My framed map shows it a bit far from Maho, so what are we in for? Looks a lot closer to/from Mary's Point...? Access?
My Sweet Amy & I are totally interested in this, so any help would be great!
Thanks, and always,

Yes on renting at Little Maho. I don't recall exact price, but Im guessing around $20 for an hour or 2. We chatted the girl at the rental shack up a little and she was very nice about not being super strict on going over the hour we paid for. I would go for at least 2 hours so you can explore the cay and snorkel if you wish. Not sure on distance, I would guess about a mile roundtrip. The advice we got was to hug the shore along Francis out to Marys Point. It gets really choppy in Fungi passage, we tried to time it between boats for less wake action. It was our first time on a kayak ever! We tend to dive head first into things we have never done before. But it was a lot of fun. Have fun!
Don't worry be happy!

It's a great trip; just did it in November. My 17 year old daughter went by herself; she did fine.
my in laws in their 60's went with us as well; my mother in law never had done anything like this before so it was kinda entertaining. they did tip on the shore line at marys point (very rocky wear your water shoes) however they enjoyed themselves.
have fun!

I'm excited to be able to answer a "regular's" question! We did the trip last visit, in late October.
$45 for 1/2 day tandem kayak rental. The watersports office opens at 10am. You need a credit card for deposit. We didn't have one and George approved us anyway, but he doesn't always, according to the guy in the Magic Hat tshirt
who was running the office.
He gave us great, very specific instructions. We left little Maho at 10:30 and were back by 12:30. We didn't have any way of telling time, so we'd hurried a little. We kayaked from Little Maho approximately 1 mile to Whistling Cay, snorkelled the front and East of Whistling Cay, crossed Fungi Passage (about 1/4 mile) to the little beach around Mary's Point and snorkelled there, then back to Little Maho, in 2 hours.
Next time, we're packing a lunch and taking a full day. It was really great!
The reef in front of Whistling Cay is very shallow, so be careful! And have fun of course! Here's a lik to our trip report from that day: http://www.virgin-islands-on-line.com/f ... p?p=170586

Hey Mahojim,
Go for it, next to our day trips it's one of our favorite things to do! My daughter and I have been doing this for years and she basically demands that we go now. She was probably 5 years old on her first paddle there and of course I did the paddling, but through the years she has mastered kayaking and at 14 she now contributes equally if not more which makes it easier. We either swim from Maho or Francis to pick up the kayak from Little Maho. We'll then kayak back to the beach to pick up snacks/drinks and then we cruise across Francis and hug the shoreline before heading across the open water. It can be choppy and there is boat traffic, but nothing to worry about! We seem to always see large turtles surfacing between Francis and the cay, we love that. Take water shoes or flip flops to walk onto the cay and explore the ruin. I think it's very painful to walk there without shoes, especially when trying to beach the kayak that's being smacked around by the waves. Great photo ops!!
Enjoy,
Budman

Some us 'so-called' regulars haven't done some of the things you have done.
