Afternoon in Charlotte Amalie

Post by jectac »

We will be "on island" in 1 week!!! WOO HOO!!!!!

My father's wife and I will be escaping to Charlotte Amalie for a day. Any suggestions on where to eat and any must sees? We aren't looking for any taxi rides. Just pretty much staying in the area and doing some shopping.

You could spend a couple hours browsing the shops in Mongoose Junction. Don't miss Caravan Gallery for very interesting and reasonably priced jewelry that's ideal for souvenirs. Walk over to Wharfside Village for lunch at Waterfront Bistro or one of the other restaurants overlooking Cruz Bay. Or vice versa.

Oops, sorry! I must be too tired to see straight - thought I saw Cruz Bay so ignore my prior post unless you also plan on spending an afternoon there also!

The Greenhouse, facing the harbor is a good place to get a casaual lunch. Walk the main street and see the shops. The prices are generally good. We always make a point of telling them that we will be here for a week and will come back later. This separates you from the cruise ship passengers who will be leaving in a few hours and it generally gets the price down. They don't want you to leave the shop without making the purchase. They know you might not come back.

Check out Jonna White's gallery (Main Street). We've got a couple of her pieces.

Agree with jimg20, separate yourself from the cruisers; you may get a better deal. At least it worked for us a few years ago when buying a camera.

Have an idea of prices at home; the STT retailers can be pretty persuasive.

Have a great trip!

If you are going to buy any jewelry, try Imperial Jewelers. We've done quite well there. Have a great vacation!

I would forego the Green House, in favor of either Glady's or Cuzzin's. Nothing wrong with the Green House, but for some local color do one of the other two.

I don't disagee with that,Promoguy. Glady's is certainly more a part of the VI. The Greenhouse may make you feel like you are at Chilie's.

Is Gladys' near the Green House? We're used to going to Green House on our departure day. If Gladys' is near there, we'll try it next time.

If you're jewelry shopping, avoid the BIG "chain stores" in favor of the smaller privately owned jewelry stores in the alleys. I found that the smaller stores have better prices, better quality and are willing to deal with you. I "third" the suggestion of looking, walking out, and going back again.

Another vote for Glady's Cafe!

Also, check out the "tent city' for some cool things! I found the best t-shirts ever there!

You have to go to glady's to eat.
she may even be singing. she loves to entertain.
you can check when cruises are there and can go by that to see how congested CA will be.

My family and I did the same last year. We shopped for a while then we walked to Frenchtown and ate at Hook Line and Sinker. http://www.hooklineandsinkervi.com/ It was a nice walk. We loved the food. We sat at a window seat facing the habor and watched the sea plane come and go. We walked back and shopped some more then got some of the best chocholates at a candy store. I cannot remember the name but we went back for more before we left for St. John
