Linnes project inspired me to share our little project....
So our BIG project this year is renovating the master bath....
When we weren't in Caribbean this year we were busting our asses on this project. Still not quite finished but I'm hoping to get the grout in this week-end.
We completely gutted it!
Apologies for the crappy photos, but if it weren't for the iPhone we wouldn't even have these!
The Plan:
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/1o ... site"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4ypwZiy7vU8/SwGIT ... 0.JPG"></a>
Gutted:
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/zS ... site"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4ypwZiy7vU8/SwGIR ... 6.JPG"></a>
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/DI ... site"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4ypwZiy7vU8/SwGIS ... 7.JPG"></a>
The new floor...
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/VT ... site"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4ypwZiy7vU8/SwGc0 ... 5.JPG"></a>
Installing the niches and wonderboard into the shower:
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/X7 ... site"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4ypwZiy7vU8/SwGIY ... 2.JPG"></a>
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Pq ... site"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4ypwZiy7vU8/SwGIj ... 6.JPG"></a>
Installing the new door:
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/wO ... site"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4ypwZiy7vU8/SwGIS ... 8.JPG"></a>
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/GS ... site"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4ypwZiy7vU8/SwGIs ... 9.JPG"></a>
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/2b ... site"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4ypwZiy7vU8/SwGIv ... 0.JPG"></a>
Tiling the shower....
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Pl ... site"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4ypwZiy7vU8/SwGcr ... 1.JPG"></a>
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/hS ... site"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4ypwZiy7vU8/SwGJQ ... 9.JPG"></a>
Shower complete (minus the grout)
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/-w ... site"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4ypwZiy7vU8/SwwNl ... 2.JPG"></a>
I heart my niches:
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/MV ... site"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4ypwZiy7vU8/SwwNp ... 3.JPG"></a>
Working on the wall:
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/X1 ... site"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4ypwZiy7vU8/SwwN1 ... 8.JPG"></a>
A nice shot of the shower with the new recessed lighting:
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/hG ... site"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4ypwZiy7vU8/SwwN9 ... 5.JPG"></a>
With wall detail:
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/56 ... site"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4ypwZiy7vU8/SwwQR ... 6.JPG"></a>
The floor:
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/3C ... site"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4ypwZiy7vU8/SzuwD ... 9.JPG"></a>
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/G3 ... site"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4ypwZiy7vU8/SzuwH ... 1.JPG"></a>
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/0N ... site"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4ypwZiy7vU8/SzuwI ... 2.JPG"></a>
We just have a few more tiles to cut and then we can grout.
Despite the way it looks in the pics Mr. Gromit was NOT doing all the work by himself. I laid every inch of that tile and was doing the same amount of work.
The project, while not on time, is on budget and will cost approximately $4,000 versus the $15,000 we had been quoted by several renovators. We even reinforced the floor.
Our 2010 project is to do the other bathroom. But I think we're better prepared and know exactly what to expect so we should be able to move a bit faster.
While this is a lot of work and not for everyone, I will say that I have enjoyed learning how to do this stuff!
I will post completed pics when it's done!

Thanks man!
I have to say that I was really glad we chose a "natural" looking porcelain tile. It's far more forgiving and gives you a bit more fudge room rather than more uniform tile.
It also helps to be working with the large 12" tile.
I did all the measuring and hubby did the cutting. We went ahead and got a decent wet saw with laser and this has made a huge difference.
It's been a labor of love let me tell you and if your marriage isn't on absolutely SOLID ground before you begin a project like this I would urge folks not to attempt it. Paying someone else to do it is cheaper than a divorce lawyer.
Fortunately Mr. Gromit and I are a GREAT team and we've just been plugging away. At this point though we just want to FINISH!!!

Us too - did that a yr ago.Gromit wrote: I have to say that I was really glad we chose a "natural" looking porcelain tile. It's far more forgiving and gives you a bit more fudge room rather than more uniform tile.

The natural looking porcelain rules, is easy to take care of, and is not slippery.

Seal the grout a week after it dries, then once a year. Keep a spray bottle filled with an ounce or so of bleach and the rest water to spray down the lower tiles after you are done showering and you'll avoid mold.
Are you going to do the "baseboard" tile? Glad we did - adds a nice finish.

Oh no we are doing EVERYTHING ourselves!
See all those #'s all over the walls? I call it bathroom renovation by #'s. I number everything as we go so i can keep track of where stuff belongs -- we even mapped out the wonderboard that way. This was critical especially once we started cutting tile! I mark the wall and the tile with the same number or letter so i know where it should be placed.
If anyone starts to take stuff down 20 years from now they are going to be like -- "These people were # freaks!"

< leaving on the 22nd of march...but too lame to figure out the ticker thing again!>
@Loria-- we left the plumbing where it is so there was no cost there.
Hubby did the electrical-- added three recessed lights (he could crawl up into the attic to do this tho so this was fairly easy. He also moved a wall outlet and hooked up with wiring so that when we turn the recessed light on over the shower the fan would come on. The other switch controls the other recessed light and the light over the sink.
Here's the new light-- sorry for the crappy pic but when I turned it on the iPhone photo looked awful:
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/XQ ... site"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4ypwZiy7vU8/SwwN6 ... 3.JPG"></a>
It's not really hard stuff but if hubby didn't have some experience with electrical work I would have subbed that out.
The key is to take the time to think things through and the internet is a great resource for info-- this was especially handy when it came time to pour the concrete for the shower base. You can't always trust the directions on the box!!
Oh and here's Gromit-- poor little guy has had to put up with all the construction!
Here he's giving me the "Mommy... Aren't you done YET?" look...
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/i9 ... site"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4ypwZiy7vU8/SwwNg ... 0.JPG"></a>
