Who Loves Snow?

Post by hoosierdaddy »

I have been a member of this forum for about 11 months and I have read alot of snow bashing. Call me crazy but I love snow. I might change my mind if I lived further north but here in the Hoosier state we have maybe one good snow per year and I love it. I love playing in it, hunting in it, running in it and even driving in it. Come on, there has to be another closet snow lover on this forum.

Nice picture!

I love snow from mid November to at latest February, as we need the snow to light up the dark here. Much rather snow, than rain and sleet.

When it's cold and snow, you can go cross country skiing, ice skating on the lakes and do other fun things.

i second what maggy says--I love snow--it is far better than freezing rain, sleet, etc. But i DON'T like it when it turns into a slushy nightmare and gets all gray and horrid (think manhattan about 6 hours after a good snowfall....ugh)

Well, I live outside of DC and when the weatherman predicts snow here it seems all of the government office and schools declare an early dismissal and send everybody home at the same time. Then all the people go to the grocery store and buy up all of the milk and toilet paper. Then on their way home they abandon their cars on the side, or the middle, of the road.
Seriously, I don't mind snow too much, though it does create a lot of problems around here. Because of the embassies and international businesses here we get a lot of people from around the world that have never even seen snow, much less driven in it, or worse, driven on black ice. Nothing against my Hindu friends, but I do find it rather humorous to see a guy in a turban with his white knuckle hands squeezing his steering wheel, with a look of unadulterated terror on his face, seemingly saying to himself, "You must become one with the road" driving his rear wheel drive Mercedes Benz in an inch, or two, of snow!
Then when we do get that one big storm of a foot, or more, every once in a while the whole city and suburbs just shuts down for a few days. Except the that governments all say "everybody but essential workers" are to take liberal leave. So I take that as 99% of the government workers are not essential.
Oh, yeah, and the on street parking is another story. A couple years back over in Baltimore this guy spent hours shoveling out a parking spot in front of his row house. Before he had a chance to pull his own car into his hard earned spot this guy pulls his car in. The homeowner told the offending gentleman that he had just cleared the spot for his car. The gentleman basically said,"Too bad" and left his car in the spot. Now the homeowner being a resourceful fellow proceeded to run a hose out to the street and every hour or so doused the guys car in water. By the time the "gentleman" came back to his car it was encased in a 6 inch block of solid ice!
Yeah, you gotta love snow around here.

My grand nieces were here in Massachusetts for the first time this weekend. They live in Hawaii. They LOVED the snow and cold weather. They went sledding, made snow angels, and ate some snow. They had alot of fun. Personally I am not a snow lover.

Nice pictures!

I like when it's just falling softly, and it's the nice big flakes-we call it Disney snow. But here in western NY, when it's usually coming off the lake in a blizzard, then not so much :(

I'm a snow hater. It didn't bother me until last winter. Now I'm just a nervous wreck whenever it snows...worried about the kids getting home ok and me getting to work ok.

I don't hate it, but wouldn't miss it.

I like to x-country ski and snow shoe on a bright sunny day with no wind chill :)

I don't like when it snows in the middle of rush hour turning a 30 minute commute into a who knows how long commute (OK, that happens in the middle of summer, too  )

JT, I had a somewhat similar story. When my wife had our second child we had a big snowfall that night. Being the loving housband that I was I cleared the street infront of our house and steps. It was spotless. The morning we left the hospital we pull up to the house to find that the snow plow had tought the empty spot was a great place to put all of the snow from our block.

I like snow. We had a 15 inch snow in Des Moines last week---we had our neighbors over, opened up several bottles of wine we had been saving for a special occasion and made snow angels in the back yard.

We go on a family ski trip pretty much every year. Here are a few snow pics from Colorado:

Still, as much as I enjoy a beautiful fresh snow, I do get tired of winter when its an ice storm or just plain cold and windy. Thats when I start dreaming of that palm tree on Salomon Beach.

I like snow! Love skiing, sledding, playing in it. December through February that is. I'm not so crazy about it when we get a blizzard in April.

Our puppy, now 5 months old, had a great time playing in the snow with our son on Saturday. They were having a blast and I was having too much fun watching them to go get a camera. (Now it's all slushy here so I'm ready for another snow storm. Just please not when we're trying to fly out to go to STJ!)

I love snow - mostly if it's sunshine too. It gives such a beautiful landscape. But I wouldn't like to live in a place with too many month with snow.

I like a nice short pretty snowstorm with little to no wind, 1-2 inch accumulation, sparkles everywhere, melts the next day or so.

But- very rarely does THAT happen.

I hate snow because I hate driving in it to/from work (usually a 45 minute commute, doubles in snow). I hate ice storms that cripple daily goings-on and cut-out paower for 8 days!!! I hate slippery sidewalks. I hate windchills. I hate having to shovel out paths in our backyard at 6.30am after a night of snow then rushing to get to work, usually while it's still snowing.

Thus, this is why I hate snow.

I used to hate snow. I lived up north and had to shovel, deal with the traffic, etc.

Now we live in NC, and in 4+ years, we've had one "storm" of 2". It was awesome. Not only did the city grind to a crippling halt, I got to watch people come flying around a bend on our street and just crash into one another over and over and over and over again.

Plus, the big little one got to play in the snow for the first time that she could remember. 4 days later it was 60 again.

I liked it. I like snow...only if it cooperates with my terms.

If I have to fly anywhere where there's snow, I go back to being a hateful curmudgeon
