My new Canon Rebel Eos - thread #2

Post by PA Girl »

XOXO's post the other week gave me the final push I needed, I ordered a Canon EOS Rebel T1i today! (The kit with the 18-55mm IS lens.)

With less than 90 days until STJ I need to get practicing!

Good luck with it. Once you have it, charge the battery over night. Then shoot lots and lots of photos. At least initially, make notes of what setting you used. That way you can look at what worked and why.

You will find yourself becoming very comcortable in a short time.

speaking of batteries, it crossed my mind to order an extra to have on hand. Will it go a full day of regular shooting on vacation? Lots of pictures of the kiddo on the beach, friends, scenery, etc.

I don't think an extra battery is necessary.

I bought the T1i in May and took it on our June trip to STJ. I took a lot of photos and didn't need to recharge the battery until around 7 days into the trip...I'd guess I'd taken at least 2500 pictures by that point.

Then on our trip a couple weeks ago I didn't recharge the battery at all and I was fine.

Good to know, now I am glad I didn't get an extra right off the bat.

Hey fellow rookie! I was thinking just this morning that my instructional DVD should be here in a couple of days. I am so excited!!

Have you started taking pictures yet?? Maybe we could do something fun for practice--like using different settings--and post the pictures. For example: take a full moon picture--or a nighttime Christmas lights picture--or a action picture of a pet or sporting event. What do you think?

Again, thank you to everyone for all of your help.

Love the idea!

My is scheduled for delivery on Monday. One of the guys in the office is also thinking about getting one so he is v. excited for the UPS truck.

It is technically a Christmas present but I am not waiting. I will let the giver wrap up the box if that makes them feel good.

Let me know what you think of the DVD. From where did you order it?

I ordered the DVD from michaelthementor.com I saw his tutorial on youtube and liked the way his teaching style and I wanted more. I found his website and pre-ordered it. I will let you know what I think of the DVD.

My Canon is a gift also. I will start playing with it once I get the DVD. Let me know when you get your camera and we can start the challenge.

I did not get any extra either--not even a bag yet! Soon come!

Have fun with your new toys - I love mine.

I have 3-4 shots for almost every picture.

I do have an extra battery. I think I only needed it once and only because I forgot to check it before I headed out.

Have fun bag shopping. I have 3 :)

I did have to buy a better padded strap. The one that came with the camera hurt my neck. I also have a "Y" strap.

And don't forget a tripod.

It was hard but I held off on the bag as I knew our schedule over the next few weeks would be keeping us close to home and I would absolutely need the bag right away.

A girl needs time to shop and compare! I had a Coach diaper bag so, errr, I have bag issues...

Already have a tripod that will be good enough for the time being.

I did get a remote for the camers so maybe we can finally get a decent family picture in front of the tree.

Have fun with your new camera!

I just attended the all day school put on by Chicago Area Camera Clubs Association, and learned a lot of new tricks. Unfortunately I also saw lots of nifty accessories that I want to buy.

There's a British magazine that sells in bookstores like Barnes & Noble or Border's, it's called "Photo Plus" and comes in a Canon edition. I pick up some good camera and photoshop tips there.

I used strictly the 18-55 kit lens at first, and liked it just fine. My walk-around lens is the ultra cheap, light and compact Canon 55-250 IS (Recently $212 on Amazon but I think it went up.) I also have a 50mm prime.

You'll have a blast learning to use this camera.

Question...you folks really take this to the beach? I'm scared the wind blown sand would ruin it.

I will but I am also considering picking up a very small camera for times I just want to stick it in my pocket and go. So my new camera might get to go to the beach somedays and might have villa gravity other days :)

I took mine to the beach and hubby took his Olympus DSLR. They stayed in the bags unless we were walking around shooting pics. No problem with sand in the bags at all. We did let it experience villa gravity on rainy days since we forgot to bring the rain sleeves.
