How big is the rug? Are you able to pick it up and put the whole thing in your freezer? If so, put the whole thing in the freezer for a couple of hours until the putty is hard. Once it's frozen, it should pull off cleanly.

I would recommend straight isopropyl alcohol and a clean rag. Try it first on a small area. If that doesn't do it, then try freezing some heavy plastic bags of ice and use them to try to freeze the putty. Use a stiff comb to pry the frozen putty off. Good luck. Whatever you do will take patience.

Did a Google search for "how to get silly putty out of carpet" since I assume the theraputty is like silly putty?

Things to try:

Goo Gone or Goof Off or KrudKutter with HOT soapy water

WD40

Alcohol

Good luck!

Well then, I guess throwing it all in your freezer isn't going to work. LOL.

I have used the goo-gone stuff for gum in fabric with less than stellar success. I like the idea of trying ice packs all around the putty but, at this point, keeping the carpet as dry as possible as you do this. That way, you can try other products later without having the carpet compromised.

Silly idea here...ever take one of those cans of compressed air and invert it? What comes out is about a billion degrees below freezing and will burn you.

Yes...I learned that the hard way.

anyway...maybe you can "spot freeze" parts of it and then comb/lift it away.

I don't know if this will work, but when my neice hit a candle of mine and it went flying on brand new carpet, I did the brown paper bag and iron thing. That worked great.

I'm not sure I would put any kind of liquid on it because if there is color in the putty, it could spread and that would be it.

Then I was looking around the net and it seems like Vinegar is a cure all.

If all else fails, call the carpet company, they be able to do a partial part of the rug.
Good luck!

My daughter once shoved silly putty in a pocket of a favorite pair of pants...what a mess. I called Crayola, who owns silly putty (it was an 800 number) and on the recording it gave cleaning instructions.

It was a few years ago since this happened, but it might be worth a try. I think the remedy was rubbing alcohol. Good luck!
